A provocative title, it certainly enticed me to "read":http://www.slate.com/id/2166480/fr/rss/ on.Should I believe the hype? Any pointers?I've filed this in the World genre, which I always think of as a lazy kind of miscellaneous, but until I hear more...

The tried and tested desert blues formula of twanging guitars, complex beats and chanting still seems fresh; and the guitars would inspire a whole new generation of afropop, or fit in with the lo-fi stuff that's coming out of US these days. Just listen to the closer Era Tasfata Adounia, where the last four minutes go into an amazing drone.

When you consider the humble beginnings of Malian Tuareg desert blues collective Tinariwen as rebel fighters / part-time musicians, and their current status one of the most popular ‘world’ music acts, it’s the finest example of how extraordinary music can transcend borders, or in Tinariwens case, the entire Sahara Desert, no matter what it’s linguistic [...]

For a band whose name means "empty places" in their native Tamashek, Tinariwen better get used to spending a lot more time away from their beloved desert homeland.

Although filed under the faintly patronising title of ‘World Music’, sonically the Tuareg troubadours of Tinariwen are much closer to home than that label would suggest. With fourth-album Imidiwan the band once again successfully stamp their distinctive Saharan sounds on rhythm and blues and plain old rock and roll. Where they sound most alien, however, [...]

Their new album, "Water of Life" is excellent. Check ...

For once I'm glad that the press like to do lists at this time of year. I've found quite a few things I've missed out on. This is one of them. (Apparently they supported the Stones this year. See. They are good for something.)It also provides an explanation for the pic Joxley was sporting for a while. Plus I've just bought myself an udu/ibo drum, and this will be great for practising along to.

Last month I was incredibly excited to find out that Tinariwen had a new album out. My excitement was tempered by the fact that I couldn't find the damn record in the U.S. Then, today I came upon the excellent world music download site (.99 cents a song, no DRM) Calabash Music. And there was Aman Iman, Tinariwen's new masterpiece. For those not in the know, Tinariwen is composed of Tuareg reb...

*It's been a while since "I've checked a gig":http://mog.com/LadyC/blog_post/49228 or had a night out.* I haven't traveled enough these days...missing my once regular jaunts through Zurich, Dublin and Paris. My last great anticipation "cancelled":http://mog.com/LadyC/blog_post/55167 and there really wasn't any other event that I felt lived up to the live experience until now. With festival May ...
