Reading many posts here and realizing that we're all in jail of some sort. We were sentenced to musical incarceration it seems.Three musical jail sentences come to mind. The first was when we decided to not like genre name tags. "Rock" is Ok. But "Progressive Rock" is worse. And "Folk Prog" is starting to get weird. I don't even know what "Hip Hop" is, but since the label exists and I've heard ...

Philip Parris Lynott was born in the Black Country on August 20, 1949, exactly one year after the Black Country's undisputed rock god, Robert Anthony Plant. The illegitimate son of an Irish mother and an Afro-Guyanese father, he would be brought up a Mancunian long enough to develop an affection the Manchester United Football Club. When he arrived a few years later to live with his mother's par...

There's been a lot of Mogbashing of the venerable Bono today...and on St. Patrick's Day that's just plain uncharitable. For Guinness-drinking atmosphere, here's one Irishman channelling another back in 1997. Hands up if you can actually hear the singer over the crowd.

Thin Lizzy is one of the greatest rock and roll bands the world has seen, and I make that claim with confidence and conviction. Phil Lynott was the ultimate classic rock star who burned himself out on drugs after leading a life of few restraints. He died in 1986 of "heart failure and pneumonia" after being admitted to the hospital from an infected liver and kidney. At the age of 36, his organs ...

I'll admit that I don't know that much of Thin Lizzy's material, but "Jailbreak" has always been one of my favorites. I used to like "The Boys Are Back In Town" but it has gotten _so_ played out. The only other track that I can think of is "Whiskey In A Jar," which I also enjoy (both the booze & the song :o) Heh - you know it's a Friday when you're thinking about drinking in the AM. BREAKOUT!...

Well, I’ve finally decided to have a well deserved break from my Troubleshooting business. Not going away anywhere special, just chillin’ out for a week and getting ready for a house/office move. Normally, when I have a break, I head out to Eire to stay with my brother and extended family for a while. On such trips it is tradition to have Thin Lizzy provide the soundtrack, so in keeping with t

I often try to avoid live albums, because they usually give me the “had to be there” feeling. Generally a live show is best experienced live, and studio recordings are best for albums. Many live albums feel like a lazy stopgap to sell product to fans in between real albums. It didn’t help that a couple of my early choices were Styx and Duran Duran live albums. Even Rush’s Exit…Stage Left

you just can't say you dig Rock N Roll without giving mad respect to Thin Lizzy, and the heart of the band, Mr. Phil Lynott (R.I.P.)Everybody knows "The Boys Are Back In Town". "Jailbreak" just rips. But the song that makes me crank the volume and break out my air guitar is "The Cowboy Song" - total duelling axe jam smack dab in the middle. This band just had total attitude, musical competence,...
