[photo courtesy of coulter] review by neild I'd never been to (le) Poisson Rouge before, so I wasn't sure what to expect from the new space in the old Village Gate basement. After wending my way through (le) Poisson's subterranean lair, and slaying the grue that guarded the entrance to the performance space proper, I found myself [...]
If you managed to wake up out of that post Thanksgiving hibernation and avoided Black Friday's death grasp, then perhaps you're up for the few shows happening around town tonight. Down in DC They Might Be Giants are playing the 9:30 Club and I've heard something about them performing their hit album Flood all the [...]
I love kids singing. I want to start off saying I hate Kids Bop and Jordy. That out of the way I typically like it when kids sing on albums. Here's a short list I've thought of. I love the Langley School Music Project, The Shaggs, Patience and Prudence, those kids that sing on Pink Floyd's The Wall, those kids at the beginning of the Rolling Stones's "You Can't Always Get What You Want", th...
is a 1979 Columbia Commuter. And no, that's not pink there....it's azalea. In high school, after having several auto fender benders, my insurance was raised to high for my meager Pier 1 Imports retail clerk salary. Thus my senior year was spent driving a Peugeot Moped around...it was monster green and noisy as all get out. The muffler had been drilled to increase the speed and I would tear arou...
So Big Daddy took obscene liberties with A Day In The Life, Hash hewed too close to the original, although Spike and dermahrk offer valuable opinions on this. And Harry Nilsson is just a wee bit too cutesySo....How 'bout this...
I didn't see or hear anything about this..I was reading my husband's Harper's Mag, the Harper's Index to be more specific, and it said"Date on which George W. Bush appeared on the game show Deal or No Deal : 4/21/08".I had to check it out. Has it really sunk to this? A game show?He even jokes about his approval rating.
These are in no particular order, but they are my favorite top 10 albums of all time. It was not an easy list to make. As I scrolled thru my iPod, there were a number of albums that could have been here, honorable mentions all of them, but this was the list I had to whittle down to. My criteria included how long I have loved it, how I couldn’t live without it, enjoyability while listening wi.
They Might Be Giants - The ElseIdlewild/Zoë, 20075 stars out of 10Two Brooklynites named John, Messrs. Linnell & Flansburgh, made four albums and a bunch of B-sides without a backing band from the mid-'80s up to '92. The majority of this work is canonized in some circles; "geek rock," "quirky pop," "art pop" (my preference), whatever you want to call the circles is up to you but you get the gis..

So, some recent discussion of prolific output prompted me to think of a band I've always had a very mixed reaction to, They Might Be Giants. A lot of their stuff kind of grates on me, but then occasionally their stuff is fantastic. They weren't putting out an album a month, but in the mid 80’s they set up their Dial-A-Song service. Think of it as an early free music sharing "technology". It.
And now for something completely different. We leave (briefly) the world of Finnish Monster Metal, and head to the world of American Geek Rock. Or whatever the hell this is. This song has always creeped me out--there's something about the juxtaposition of the jaunty melody and vocals with the surreal horror of the lyrics that gets under my skin. So who says Halloween music has to be dark, b...
MUSIC NEWS - They Might Be Giants are deep into their new adult album project as well as a kids DVD and CD, and a picture book for the kids (please don't go all BARE NAKED... on us and have things fall apart) ! Not sure how they plan a release schedule with so much, and so diverse, material, but at least they've guaranteed a USA tour in October & November 2009 !But in the me
I first heard them in college, of course. I owe alot of my eclectic musical tastes to FSU's V89, and They Might Be Giants were the greatests and weirdest stuff I had ever heard. Their combonation of intelect and silliness is perfect. While I don't have any kids persoanlly yet, I would recommend their childrens albums to anyone, young or old (or really young or really old). They are a testem...
