Thelonious Monk's final recordings for Riverside before signing with Columbia resulted in this two-LP set, which contains lengthy runthroughs of Monk's standard repertoire by his quartet at concerts in Milan and Paris. While the leader/pianist's solos are excellent and tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse is in fine form, the spots for bassist John Ore and drummer Frankie Dunlop sound quite routine (Ore simply walks during his solos) and unnecessary. All of the material had been previously recorded in more definitive versions but this long out-of-print two-fer is still quite enjoyable if not overly memorable.
