The full-blown ock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom, written almost entirely by Pete Townshend. Hailed as a breakthrough upon its release, its critical standing has diminished somewhat in the ensuing decades because of the occasional pretensions of the concept and because of the insubstantial nature of some of the songs that functioned as little more than devices to advance the rather sketchy plot. Nonetheless, the double album has many excellent songs, including "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard," "Sensation," "Christmas," "We're Not Gonna Take It," and the dramatic ten-minute instrumental "Underture." Though the album was slightly flawed, Townshend's ability to construct a lengthy conceptual narrative brought new possibilities to ock music. Despite the complexity of the project, he and the Who never lost sight of solid pop melodies, harmonies, and forceful instrumentation, imbuing the material with a suitably powerful grace.

Tommy, can you hear me?

So, I just watched the movie version of Tommy from way back in the day for the first time. Wow, definitely a very strange movie at times. Some of the visuals are just out there. They do fit the music very well, though. I don't think it's an outstanding movie, but it's worth a viewing. Apparently Ann-Margret got an Oscar-nomination for playing the mother. I don't know how significant that is sin...

The Who Rock Kilburn On New DVD

A December 1977 concert from Kilburn, London, considered a holy grail by Who fans, was a somewhat ambivalent experience for the band, according to frontman Roger Daltrey. "I just remember it was kind of a weird day," Daltrey told Billboard.com about the Gaumont State Theatre show, which was filmed for Jeff Stein's documentary "The Kids Are Alright"which was released in its entirety Nov. 18...

A song I've always enjoyed, by a band that refuses to die, or at least stop reuniting.I bought the Tommy album secondhand for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 at a yard sale in Winnipeg. I really only bought it for 'Pinball Wizard', but I figured, for $2, hey, why not. overall, honestly, it's a decent album (this may be understating things for some people, but I was never a huge Who fan an...

Good morning MOG! Isn't this a lovely Swahbedoo-dah day?Why no, I didn't have a big bowl of crack for breakfast. It's my first day of "vacation." Yes, I put vacation in quotation marks because in my little world, vacation doesn't mean taking a trip somewhere fabulous. I expect the farthest I'll go is to the movies. But all the same I don't have to go to work, so I predict a tres good day.S...
