Quadrophenia

Pete Townshend revisited the ock opera concept with another double-album opus, this time built around the story of a young mod's struggle to come of age in the mid-'60s. If anything, this was a more ambitious project than Tommy, given added weight by the fact that the Who weren't devising some fantasy but were re-examining the roots of their own birth in mod culture. In the end, there may have been too much weight, as Townshend tried to combine the story of a mixed-up mod named Jimmy with the examination of a four-way split personality (hence the title Quadrophenia), in turn meant to reflect the four conflicting personas at work within the Who itself. The concept might have ultimately been too obscure and confusing for a mass audience. But there's plenty of great music anyway, especially on "The Real Me," "The Punk Meets the Godfather," "I'm One," "Bell Boy," and "Love, Reign o'er Me." Some of Townshend's most direct, heartfelt writing is contained here, and production-wise it's a tour de force, with some of the most imaginative use of synthesizers on a ock record. Various members of the band griped endlessly about flaws in the mix, but really these will bug very few listeners, who in general will find this to be one of the Who's most powerful statements.

Had a bit of a drive today going home, so I decided to put on the greatness that is Quadrophenia. Listened to it from start to finish and as always loved it. Here's the song "5:15".

Pete Townshend now looks back on the album with great praise. "The music is the best music that I've ever written, I think and it's the best album that I will ever write."When a man is running from his bossWho hold a gun that fires "cost"And people die from being coldOr left alone because they're oldAnd bombs are dropped on fighting catsAnd children's dreams are run with ratsIf you complain you...

Yup, fellow mogger Vroomster and I attended an private show thrown by the makers of Rock Band that featured a "very special guest" as it said on the ticket. There were rumors of The Who playing but I didn't think that was possible. First I thought it would be someone playing a Who song on Rock Band. Then I thought maybe they will do a couple tunes. But after the first few tunes I knew this was go...

Quadraphenia Coming to the U.K. Stage, Hayes' Home Being Auctioned, more
9 months ago

The Who 's Quadraphenia has finally been adapted for the stage and will tour the U.K. starting May 9 through September 29. Per Pete Townshend , "It's taken a long time and a lot of wrangling to accept that Quadrophenia is probably never going to work as conventional music theatre. So I hope for a grand and chaotic explosion of music and chorus that revives the memories of being young in the '6...
