AMG Review of The Great Love Hits
Andrew Hamilton
All Music GuideTen of these 14 tracks are good classic sides produced by Thom Bell, and four are Hugo Perreti/Luigi Creatore productions. The Perreti/Creatore sides did nothing in the States but were received well in Europe. The best of Perreti/Creatore is the lovely "If You Are There." All the big ones are here, including "You Are Everything," "Break Up to Make Up," "You'll Never Get to Heaven," "Betcha by Golly Wow" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New." Contour even thought to include two of the best album cuts of all time -- "Peek a Boo" and the magical "People Make the World Go Round." The most obvious omission is "Stop, Look & Listen." In the States, the Stylistics' claim to fame was their first three albums (all produced by Bell). When Bell's involvement ended, so did the American public's interest in their recordings -- save for a few singles -- though the group remained viable on the concert circuit.
