In one of the strangest covers I've ever seen in my life, The Stooges covered Madonna's 1998 hit "Ray of Light" at the Rock Hall ceremonies. True, Iggy Pop and Madonna are both Michigan natives. And true, Stooges bassist Mike Watt has done session work with Kelly Clarkson, so it's not like there's no precedent. But that doesn't discount the weirdness (pun absolutely intended) of this video: Throughout it all, I found myself looking for a surprise cameo by the So... MORE

I can't believe I missed this. It was aired live last night only on VH1 Classic, which I don't get. Excuse the crappy sounding clip, better ones should pop up eventually.
The band performed "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light," and Iggy gave a fabulously deadpan quote of "Like A Virgin" at the end.
Madonna was upset that while The Stooges have been nominated numerous times, they've never been inducted. So in protest she asked them to perform in her place. I'm glad Mado... MORE

After the larks we had at the Meltdown curated by Patti Smith a couple of years ago, I was excited at the prospect of the festival being curated by Jarvis Cocker. We failed to get tickets to Jarvis in conversation with Don Letts, The Forest of No Return (various players performing songs from old Disney films) and Devo (it's ok though, we got tickets for their show next week) but we did get hold of tickets for the Stooges show, which we went to last night. I acted fast enough ... MORE

To return to a previous topic, I just caught Iggy & The Stooges on the Jonathan Ross show. Did I cringe? Did I cry? Kinda. I cried with laughter! Maybe I was a bit mean saying it would just be embarrassing to see them try to capture the old magic... But it was certainly worth seeing Iggy cavort amongst the studio cameramen and leer at a non-plussed audience member sneering I Wanna Be Your Dog. This is what TV is all about. And this is what Rock n R... MORE

THE STOOGES – THE WEIRDNESS (2007)
RATING
To be frank, surely no-one really had high expectations for a great return from the original garage Punk band ? Without David Bowie, riotous carnal live shows, a brush with the commercial charts (the annoying “Real Wild One”), monumental drug use, and flashing his cock at regular intervals, what would be left of Iggy Pop’s legacy over the last 30 years since the break up of The Stooges ? His solo recording career has ... MORE

When The Stooges first started their life as a music group they played songs with the help of vacuum cleaners, empty oil drums and washboards. This was the sound of Detroit, as Lead Singer Iggy Pop later said where he came from was the constant sound of factory machines pounding, metal scraping, saws buzzing, so it naturally found its way into the music. At first "The Psychadelic Stooges" as they were called in the earlier days, were actually not taken seriously as a group. I... MORE

I saw the the Stooges at the Congress Theater in Chicago Sunday night, and it was hands down one of the best concerts I have ever seen. No matter how enthusiastic the crowd was, they were no match for Iggy Pop's enthusiasm, which would have been remarkable for anyone, let alone an AARP member. What's even more surprising is that no song felt out of place. I expected as much from the selections from The Stooges and Fun House, but what was more remarkable to me was that the s... MORE

So on my friend Karl's advice, I downloaded the new Stooges album. Since Karl introduced me to the Stooges lo these many years ago when he put "Raw Power" on a mix tape for me, I figured I would take his advice despite my skepticism. Overall, I'm glad I did. It's really hard to evaluate an album like this on its own merits.
It's hard to avoid comparing it to the old Stooges stuff and asking if this belongs in the Stooges canon, blah blah. Well, I mean, there's ... MORE

In June, 1973 The Stooges played their one UK concert at the Kings Cross Cinema. It was a midnight gig, which meant that first of all a lucky bunch of us drove up to Aylesbury (about 30 miles north of London) to see David Bowie being Ziggy Stardust. It wasn’t the best show I’ve ever seen, but it was the most nervous. Iggy had a verrrrry long mic cord and wandered into the audience a lot. He sat on a girl’s lap and sang right into her eyes. He grabbed one guy by the side ... MORE

Leave it to the reformed proto-punk rockers, The Stooges (with Mogger Mike Watt on bass), to deliver a set at SXSW last night (Sat., March 17), that MTV News reporter Gil Kaufman described as the "true apocalypse." Kaufman wrote: "The true apocalypse, though, came a short time later with a set that was the perfect capper to a chaotic five-day journey. To say that reunited Detroit punk godfathers the Stooges blew the roof off Stubb's would be an understatement (and no... MORE
