The Staple Singers just may be America's First Family of Gospel Soul. The Music of The Church fused with the sensual, earthy attitude of Delta Blues.**Roebuck "POP" Staples** and his daughters are as steeped in the traditional music of America as anyone can be.With Pop's light, hopeful tenor and Mavis' husky contralto the fire and ice nature of great Gospel-soul, the central themes of sin and re...

I have just recently been turned onto the Staple Singers. You most likely are familiar with the song "Respect Yourself". While that is a great song from a great erea that is the Staple Singers. It is the Staple Singers earlier guitar and gospel sound that really is the honest beauty that connects to my soul. I have always loved gospel music but the pure gospel singing with Pops Staples blues li...

Funky Friday, Riffing on Baudolino

Here I've been racking my brain for weeks trying to find a worthy post for Funky Friday, and Buadolino was kind enough to point me to Mavis Staples. That jogged a long lost memory back in the deep, dark recesses of my brain. The likely reason this was such a deep, dark memory is that the Staples weren't exactly known for playing funky music, though their music did acquire a definite funky flavo...

Long lost set of soulful spirituals is a real holiday treat

The Staple singers burst into the popular conscience with their striking soul-gospel hits for Stax in the 1970s; but the quartet had been singing together in church since the early '50s, and recorded for United and Vee-Jay later in that decade. In the early '60s they moved to the Riverside label, best known for its jazz and folk releases, and stayed until the label folded in 1964. Their second ...

I Could Never Be as Cool as Mavis Staples

...is all I can think about when I watch/hear her sing. Unbelievable. First took note of them the first time I saw The Last Waltz and have been looking for more live stuff by them ever since. Found some good clips and put'em into a "channel":http://www.searchles.com/channels/show/4426 below - mostly from the early70s. She's just so flippin hip.

The Staple Singers 'Soul Folk in Action' (1968)

Today we have a grippin' long lost folk-gospel classic from "God's greatest hitmakers." It's almost sacrilegious for this album to be outta print. Patients, you know that the doctors and nursemaids here at the asylum don't like to get too preachy. Hallelujah lawd. But the Staple Singers debut Stax LP, Soul Folk in Action is a blend of perfect medicine-the top of pops outside of their Vee-J...
