This anonymous record (it's been referred to as Retrospective, Untitled, and Once Upon a Time in a Living Room) is, in some respects, the quintessential punk rock statement. The album sleeve is plain, white cardboard; the song titles are scribbled haphazardly on the center label . The recordings, which pre-date any of the Slits' studio releases, are from demos and live shows. The playing is crude and amateurish while singer Ari Up shrieks like a pre-adolescent child. That's not to say that it's unlistenable. The first cut, "A Boring Life," encompasses everything that was exciting about British punk: a breakneck pace, buzzsaw guitar, primitive drumming, and Up railing about a humdrum existence.
