Their Satanic Majesties Request

Without a doubt, no Rolling Stones album -- and, indeed, very few ock albums from any era -- split critical opinion as much as the Rolling Stones' psychedelic outing. Many dismiss the record as sub-Sgt. Pepper posturing; others confess, if only in private, to a fascination with the album's inventive arrangements, which incorporated some African rhythms, Mellotrons, and full orchestration. Never before or since did the Stones take so many chances in the studio. This writer, at least, feels that the record has been unfairly undervalued, partly because purists expect the Stones to constantly champion a lues 'n' raunch world view. About half the material is very strong, particularly the glorious "She's a Rainbow," with its beautiful harmonies, piano, and strings; the riff-driven "Citadel"; the hazy, dream-like "In Another Land," Bill Wyman's debut writing (and singing) credit on a Stones release; and the majestically dark and doomy cosmic rocker "2000 Light Years From Home," with some of the creepiest synthesizer effects (devised by Brian Jones) ever to grace a ock record. The downfall of the album was caused by some weak songwriting on the lesser tracks, particularly the interminable psychedelic jam "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)." It's a much better record than most people give it credit for being, though, with a strong current of creeping uneasiness that undercuts the gaudy psychedelic flourishes. In 1968, the Stones would go back to the basics, and never wander down these paths again, making this all the more of a fascinating anomaly in the group's discography.

And that ain't old!I caught Jonesy a few years ago as an opening act for King Crimson and he was just over the top. He had it all going on: virtuoso musicianship, great catalog to pick from (duh) and enough money and security to not care - he just played what was fun for him and that was totally apparent.John Paul Jones got his start as a session player and producer/arranger before he got sucke...

last night jessica and i were laying in her car and passing a bowl back and forth, and this song came on. i gotta say, i've heard it before, but i don't think i ever really HEARD it. first of all, the music comes in waves - it's all layered. one instrument starts and plays, and THEN another one starts up, and they build on top of each other. and the words are fantastic, too - at least in a s...

She's WAS A Rainbow...

My dad first played me the song She's A Rainbow when I was in middle school. We used to go on car rides to the flea market, where I'd buy basketball cards and he'd look for old books and movie memorabilia. It was a long car ride, so he used to make mix tapes of classic rock songs. I always felt that She's A Rainbow was my song -- very few people knew about it, and in my age group, no one but...

Resting (somewhat) comfortably after the required medical cut-and-paste a few days ago. Yep, the Knife went under the knife - again. Those in the know say it went well. I hope so. For my part, I'm doing the physical therapy and watching for any anomalies. I should be more mobile in short order. To all of you at MOG who have lent your support since the unfortunate breakage, you have my eternal g...

Last year at this time I was getting ready for a trip to Argentina. I documented that trip at my travel blog, the Around the World Blog, including my meetings with a beautiful and brilliant woman who has worked to oppose the military junta. Her short jail term makes her luckier than as many as 30,000 Argentines who... disappeared. This week a distinctly Nazi-oriented Roman Catholic priest, Fath...

From Wikipedia:"In Another Land" by the Rolling Stones, featured on their 1967 album "Their Satanic Majesties Request".Written by bassist Bill Wyman, "In Another Land" is the only Rolling Stones song to feature Wyman on lead vocals, and one of two only Rolling Stones songs to be written by him (the other being "Downtown Suzie.") "In Another Land" was recorded on a night where Wyman had shown up...
