The Raveonettes third album Lust Lust Lust is the sound of a band rescuing their career from the clutches of cliché and rediscovering the magic that made them so exciting on their debut Chain Gang of Love. The opening track "Aly, Walk with Me" serves notice that things are going to be a lot different, the menacing prowl of the verses giving way to a deafening burst of white light/white heat noise halfway through the song. Anyone fearing that Lust Lust Lust would be another record lost to over-production and slickness should, once they regain their hearing, be ecstatic. The duo recapture the fire, mystery, and dirty glamour of their early records and add a sharper melodic sense on a batch of songs that will stick to you like a sharp knife between the ribs. Tracks like the thrillingly bleak yet devastatingly pretty "Dead Sound," the swaying "The Beat Dies," and the classically melodic "Black Satin" are as good as anything the band has done to date (and frankly, compare quite ably to the work of their most obvious influence, the Jesus and Mary Chain). Sune Rose Wagner took over the production task from Richard Gottherer and stripped away all remnants of the glossy hack job they did on Pretty in Black. Throughout the record, the reverb is so heavy it might make you woozy, the drums clatter like trash can lids, and the vocals struggle to make it through the layers of haze but Wagner's light touch and newfound sense of restraint means the arrangements sound fully realized and if not three-dimensional, a very strong two. Sharin Foo's vocals sounds as glacial and, as ever, Wagner's guitar melodies are note perfect (check his work on "Blitzed" for a short lesson on how to do a lot with only a few notes) and the two of them appear as reassuringly unwholesome as ever. Happy about it even, as they sing of being tied to evil hearts, black lollipops, and death by deceit in their sweet and unconcerned voices. Lust Lust Lust should have been the follow up to Chain Gang of Love; Pretty in Black can just be considered a mistake, and fans of the fuzzy, decadent and over-driven version of the Raveonettes can be happy that they have their band back; nastier, prettier and better than ever.

The Raveonettes - Lust, Lust, Lust

Lately I’ve been listening to a load of bands that I had never heard of before I got a job that keeps me sitting down for the better part of the day; parked behind a computer screen.  Internet radio is a lifesaver after lunch and it’s been quite a treat to get to listen to loads of new music (none of which I actively have to pursue). This album, Lust Lust Lust (amazon) (itunes), was released i

I bought The Raveonettes’ newest album, Lust Lust Lust, today on iTunes. Two songs into the preview, and I was dedicated. This album is the whole reason I listen to music, and I felt compelled to share.I always hesitate to write reviews because, while I so enjoy music, I’m not particularly well-versed in music terminology, and at times I feel ill-equipped to endorse anything. After all, there

Last night the Raveonettes played a packed house at the Double Door in Chicago. It was my first time in the venue, and I was impressed. The place reminded me a lot of one of my favorite local venues that closed a few years ago; though Double Door is quite a bit larger. The old, black-painted interior with the dimly lit bar, an elevated stage and a great sound system felt exactly like my old ...

Not so long ago I lamented the Magnetic Fields' utter failure to channel the Jesus and Mary Chain despite trying their hardest on "Distortion." Now here come the Raveonettes with their own attempt, and it's much more successful. Loud, distorted, reverberating, and alternately sultry and sunny. The key is to add the element of danger, something the MF are far too wry to manage. "Aly Walk With Me...

From Wikipedia-The Raveonettes are a Danish rock and roll duo consisting of Sune Rose Wagner (on guitar, instruments, vocals) and Sharin Foo (on bass, guitar and vocals). Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers, coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal sim...

The Raveonettes and The Kills. I picture them as two super cool cars speeding along the same desolate two lane highway, side by side, one on the wrong side of the divider. I've been waiting for them to switch lanes, and with their latest releases it seems they are closer than ever to doing just that. The parallels have grown more clear, the pop sensibilities more often bubble to the surface,...
