AMG Review of The Downward Road

All Music GuideThe Downward Road -- the title comes from what Berg views as the "descent" into adulthood -- is strangely endearing. Berg's sexually explicit lyrics will be provocative to some. But there's such an honest matter-of-factness to his delivery, in an early Todd Rundgren kind of way, that it translates instead to a friendly awkwardness. Especially effective are sparser numbers like "Pressing Lips" and "Heavy Metal Tears" where Berg exposes his unadorned voice for all to poke and prod at. Straightforward rocker "Cigarette Dangles" has a distinctively Kim Mitchell feel to it. In fact, Ed Stasium's no-nonsense production helps deliver TPOH's most direct and accessible recording to date.
