The sounds of Pink Mountaintops’ Outside Love (PHW review attempt) continue to thrill, and now the sights that go along with it do as well. Here is the video for fuzzed-out, Phil Spector-meets-The Jesus And Mary Chain rocker “Execution”, wherein a bunch of chicks take over “vocal” duties from Stephen McBean. Which is sort of ironic after McBean did the same/opposite in the “While We We
Sitting as track number two on Pink Mountaintops latest LP 'Outside Love', the newly released Execution is a fuzzy, indie rock slice of brilliance that, on some levels, could well be regarded as a Stephen MCbean anthem. Echoed vocals wail over distorted guitar as a simple, repeated percussion beat fills out the background.
Stephen McBean's Black Mountain alter-ego provide a glorious confection of an album that combines hearts-and-flowers and lush (wall of) sound with visceral, arresting and sometimes dark imagery, to beautiful effect. Jude Clarke is smitten.
I'm going to get this right out up front: I'm not a Black Mountain fan. I think their music is okay, but doesn't warrant nearly the praise it receives in the Blogosphere. That disclaimer out of the way it's time to turn our attentions towards Outside Love, the forthcoming album from Black Mountains' Stephen McBean. Pink Mountaintops just released Outside Love on Jagjaguwar (click here to buy) and now have a video for “Execution”.Pink Mountaintops is Steve McBean and band. Coming from a punk rock background, the sound is noisy and scattered yet incredibly focused. You can hang on to it, clutch it and enjoy it.The video is something unexpected. [...]
I'd like to express some affection for some bands that are either local and virtually unknown or simply aren't getting much love on Mog.For one, Midlake. They're not exactly obscure, but they're new to me and I like them a lot. Their album "The Trials of Van Occupanther" is at times truly beautiful. They have a sweet folky sound that sounds like it could have come from any of the past three dec...
