AMG Review of Giant Day
Tyson Bjorge
All Music GuideThe Giant Day is the second EP from Olivia Tremor Control and has become a collectors item among fans of the band. Subtitled as a prelude to Dusk at Cubist Castle, the music is exactly that: bridging their first EP, California Demise, to Dusk at Cubist Castle, which is their first full length album. The main characteristics of the Olivias are there, including the extra sounds that add depth to the basic tracks. "The Princess Turns the Key to Cubist Castle" and "I'm Not Felling Human" even feature the fuzzed-out guitar similar to early Neutral Milk Hotel. The title track, "The Giant Day," leads the way with its bubbling baseline and trickling guitar work, before giving way to the fuzzy and plodding "Shaving Spiders." The final track, "The Giant Day (Dusk)," closes out with the band's trademark manipulated tapes and sounds. As with most OTC works, there is an underlying theme open to interpretation by the listener. The vinyl EP is out of print, but can be found in its entirety on Singles and Beyond.
