(Carl) Newman, Neko Case, Dan Bejar (of Destroyer fame) and more... They make sparkling, intelligent music for people that like some talent to go along with the hooks... I lean heavily towards the Newman / Case side of the NPs... I know that most people around here know about 'em... but there's nothing... MORE

i think i like the new pornographers again. i'm not sure why i stopped.

I had a blast last Friday in Tucson seeing the New Pornographers. Seems like they played almost everything from Challengers and Twin Cinema. And then a fair amount of songs from Mass Romantic and Electric Version.They played so much it seemed that A.C. Newman seemed to be asking his bandmates what song to do next during the encore. Everything I've read about The New Pornographers says that Dan Bejar never tours with them, but there he was. Maybe just this tour? Neko Case's... MORE

What does one bring back from one's travels? Souvenirs, postcards, photographs snapped here and there...
For me, it was none of the above. Like Ulysses, what I retain for safe keeping are the people I met, the voices I heard, the conversations I shared, the transient traces of moving places and a coruscating cloud...

When I was first introduced to the New Pornographers, I didn't like them at all. I don't know why exactly. Their music is very catchy and upbeat. It just didn't click for me then. It took a few listens-maybe more than a few, thanks to my uber-fan friends-for me to become attached to a limited number of songs. I liked those fronted by Neko Case. My favorite things about the New Pornographers is how Dan Bejar tries to fit in. I always wait for his songs because he's usually A) at his poppiest and B) still sounds like Dylan, with a blood transfusion from Bowie, singing a story song with New Porno's group-vocals and power chords.

Music aficionados (aka MOGgers) have been pining over the NP's new album since, well, since _Twin Cinema_ came out in 2005. Well in the last month or so, some tracks have surfaced from the forthcoming release _Challengers_. Here, I "challenge" you to another song. Sorry, I know.
