The National Lights

One of my favorite records so far this year has been The Dead Will Walk, Dear by The National Lights. Has anyone else been enjoying it? I was surprised to see how few listeners they have on Last.fm. The music is bright and summer-y. But the lyrics? Murder ballads.

Creepy but really beautiful, this debut album by a band from somewhere in Virginia spins lurid gothic images into soft, countrified textures of guitar, banjo and voice (no drums at all). Here's a little from my Dusted review which ran a while ago, but I just saw on the web: "The combination – of pretty serenity and murderousness – is disturbing. It's a little off-putting.
