I love it when a piece of music I own, new or not, gives me something drastically different than what I was expecting from it. Most recently this happened to me last week when I finally gave Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers By indie kids The National. I guess I was expecting the typical jangly watered down Life’s Rich Pageant era REM sonically altered emowhine we get so much of these days. Umm, yeah I got schooled. What I got was a band with a wide bottomed sound, occasion... MORE

One of my personal favorite American bands of the 2000s is The National. Both of their last two albums (Alligator and Boxer) ended up as the #2 albums in the BAGeL Radio end-of-year charts in their respective years(2007, 2005), so it is most exciting to hear that any new National music will be forthcoming. In this case it is an EP of previously unreleased stuff plus a DVD filmed mostly during the recording of Boxer. Hat tip to The Tripwire for the heads up. Check out th... MORE

If I told my 16 year old self that one day I would like something that sounds like The National, I would have kicked my own ass. But I've had their stuff playing on a loop on my Ipod - to work, from work, in the car, etc. etc.

January is just such a cruel, cruel month. Maybe not for you guys who were at the mog meeting, but for me it certainly was. Like Joxley already said in one of his posts, exam periods shouldn't be just after Christmas. First of all, it wrecks the days off you have, secondly, it gives your new year a complete false start. So for the past month I have had my nose in the books, at one point even at a pace of a novel a day, and I even had to work whole nights a time or t... MORE

The big Idolator poll (http://pop.idolator.com/tag/idolator-pop-07/) went up today, agglomerating the results of some 454 critics. I was a participant, and if you have somehow missed my several-month-long pontification on 2007, you can check my ballot here: http://pop.idolator.com/331581/ballot-jennifer-kelly I have mixed feelings about these averagings of critical preferences, since all the interesting oddities get cancelled out and we learn, quel surpise, that a ... I basically started 2007 by missing Jarvis in Paradiso. I recall saying then “Well, I already have had my biggest disappointed and made my dumbest mistake of the year!” Warning, don’t say that ever, because it will come back and bite you in the ass. This last year, I reached new highs and lows, I felt things I had never felt, both as part of the ups and of the downs. I came to a lot of realizations which kind of knocked the naivety right out of me. In short, I ... MORE

The National are heavy hitters for 2007's "Best Of" lists for their album The Boxer. Looking through MOG posts for the band, I didn't see one for the video for "Apartment Story," so here it is.

Great time of the year to catch albums that may have slipped past me by reviewing Top Album of the Year Charts. Found this album on a couple of Moggers lists. Great find!

Seeing all your lists made me feel left out. I did post my list on Dale’s post some time ago………but here it is one more time. While looking at this list thinking that this guy Henry sure knows how to put together a fine list………you can listen to this song. A song that entered my mind while taking a shower this morning. Just to keep it PG-13 I will say that I shower fully dressed. I’ve done so since 1991 where I was attacked by 50 greek women on the island of Korfu, Greece.... MORE

After a slow start 2007 turned into a pretty good year in music. True, there were few true masterpieces. There certainly were disappointments: Arcade Fire, Interpol, New Pornographers, Nine Black Alps, Queens Of The Stone Age, Radiohead, Shins, and White Stripes all can do better than the records they released this year. (And please don't bring back the painful memory of the new Stooges record.) There certainly was a lot of Brit pop the only question concerning which is just ... MORE

The big year-end list of albums is up now at PopMatters (http://www.popmatters.com/pm/features/article/52152/the-best-albums-of-2007), and I was assigned to cover The National's Boxer. Here's what I said:
Dark brooding and evocative-though without ever laying literal meanings bare-the National's fifth full-length turned a complex formula up several notches. Here, again, as on Alligator, were the murmured images, sensual melodies, and sudden classical flourishes, yet the... MORE
