Can someone please explain why the Strokes got huge and the Mooney Suzuki didn't?

I saw them tear the roof off a club in the early 00s, blowing the then-super-hot Sahara Hotnights off the stage with their Who/Jam/Zombies garage rock pyrotechnics. Then again last fall at CMJ, I went to see them, and, a little heavier and older, they were fantastic...still jumping off the amps and riding shoulders and doing those back-bending guitar solos.
