I kind of know stuff. Not about a lot of things, but among my areas of expertise is the Pop Music Scene of the 1960's. It's nothing to be particularly proud of or impressed by, and it doesn't have many practical applications to actual life, but there's a lot of arcane information floating around my brain about records. Imagine my surprise, then, when I checked out the 'Where The Action Is!' box...
...if the song sounds cheerful and bubble-gummish.Harry Nilsson wrote this little jewel for *the Monkees*. It showed up in one of those little music-video-like bits that weren't part of the story they used to put at the end of some shows, with the boys performing a song.In this case, they were all dressed up in white pants, striped blazers and straw hats (even Nesmith, of course).Davy cheerfully
This song came on while I had my iTunes on shuffle this evening. It got me thinking. When I was a kid watching reruns of The Monkees on TV and listening to their music, Mike Nesmith was my least favorite Monkee. Now he's my favorite. That is all.
A post from a *Monkees* fan-site on "*Psycho-Jello*":http://psycho-jello.com/Monkees, about the way the Monkees were perceived, and their continuing popularity years after many bands who slagged them off are gone and forgotten:The Monkees were dismissed and hated by rock critics and wannabe musicians because they seemed to get fame the easy way, without struggle. Their weekly television show wa...
They are not your stepping stone, but they are your waiters. I haven't quite worked out how I really feel about this, but my first impression was.."they look really happy!" I hope this work is meaningful for these dear monkeys...Now back to your regularly scheduled life.
Today, "BBC 6 Music":http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/steve_lamacq/ is featuring "the first summer of love" with music from 1967 and they're pretty heavy with The Monkees (and The Four Tops). Lamaq thinks that Mickey Dolenz is one of the great underrated rock vocalists of all time. And I started to think about how my relationship with their music is, erm, complicated...Their nickname of "The P...
Boz of SLC posted earlier about The Monkees and I had a flashback to my far far away youth. Where my best friend Tracie and I would listen to records (you know, those fragile vinyl thingies that you had to turn over to hear all the songs?) and make up dances to the songs. Now, I know all kids do this (don't they?) but do they have routines to The Monkees Gonna Buy Me a Dog AND Roger Miller's...
This is the first MP3 I've MOGified. Listen to this absolutely gorgeous song and tell me it's not the work of a good band. Sure, it sounds like Grace Slick singing...hell, maybe it is! Still, listen and then explain why, 40 years later, many people continue to think The Monkees are a joke band. "They didn't play their instruments." Sorry, does Justin Timberlake play an instrument? "They didn't ...
I realized this morning I've been unfair to The Monkees for over 30 years.Well, maybe not unfair to all of them - I can't speak for Davey, Mickey, and Peter. But I've been a huge fan of Michael Nesmith since Pete introduced me to his 1972 solo album "And The Hits Just Keep on Comin'" ten years ago. It's a masterpiece of country rock, recorded in Nesmith's home studio with only "Red" Rhodes on p...
I always love that moment on my commute to/from work when the song that comes on my iPod just perfectly fits the moment. It was as if some film director planned it out or something. I can't pinpoint what makes a good commute song. There are many factors involved including my mood, the weather, and the vibe in the train/bus. Often times songs by Blur, Pulp, Supertramp, and The Monkees seem t...
So I'm back in the lovely suburban area right outside of Chattanooga for the summer.and "the drug years" was on vh1 tonite. I've concluded if I could have lived at any other time, I would be a young adult in the mid-1960's, probably in the haight-asbury area. And from there, I got inspired to read some Keuroac & listen to some records. Problem is, the oldest stuff I own is some of my mom's Mo...
I finally stumbled across a copy of "Head" and decided to pick it up. I'd heard so much about it and, as one of my friends puts it, it's proof that the Monkees didn't completely suck. For the most part, it's kind of a throwaway for me. Some trippy speed effects and movie dialogue here, a half-assed Nilsson cover there. It was hardly worth the $20 I paid. Or so I thought. I have listened to "Por...
The Monkees, and especially Michael Nesmith, have been my secret music love affair since 1986 when I moved from Texas to Salt Lake City, and went to a Monkees concert at the local theme park with my family. My siblings and I scrounged up enough change to buy tickets to the show (but not without a healthy donation from the old lady next door) and my father was pleased to take us to our favorite...
These have been up for a while, but the official Monkees site has three great podcasts featuring Mike Nesmith being interviewed by Rhino's Chief Monkees Officer, Andrew Sandoval. The best one is Part 2, wherein Nez talks about the band's...
