Mike Nesmith Talks about the Monkees

These have been up for a while, but the official Monkees site has three great podcasts featuring Mike Nesmith being interviewed by Rhino's Chief Monkees Officer, Andrew Sandoval. The best one is Part 2, wherein Nez talks about the band's...

The Monkees Were Good. So There.

This is the first MP3 I've MOGified. Listen to this absolutely gorgeous song and tell me it's not the work of a good band. Sure, it sounds like Grace Slick singing...hell, maybe it is! Still, listen and then explain why, 40 years later, many people continue to think The Monkees are a joke band. "They didn't play their instruments." Sorry, does Justin Timberlake play an instrument? "They didn't ...

The Monkees, and especially Michael Nesmith, have been my secret music love affair since 1986 when I moved from Texas to Salt Lake City, and went to a Monkees concert at the local theme park with my family. My siblings and I scrounged up enough change to buy tickets to the show (but not without a healthy donation from the old lady next door) and my father was pleased to take us to our favorite...

The Monkees: good, believe it or not

I finally stumbled across a copy of "Head" and decided to pick it up. I'd heard so much about it and, as one of my friends puts it, it's proof that the Monkees didn't completely suck. For the most part, it's kind of a throwaway for me. Some trippy speed effects and movie dialogue here, a half-assed Nilsson cover there. It was hardly worth the $20 I paid. Or so I thought. I have listened to "Por...

all the good that's happening

I kind of know stuff. Not about a lot of things, but among my areas of expertise is the Pop Music Scene of the 1960's. It's nothing to be particularly proud of or impressed by, and it doesn't have many practical applications to actual life, but there's a lot of arcane information floating around my brain about records. Imagine my surprise, then, when I checked out the 'Where The Action Is!' box...

...if the song sounds cheerful and bubble-gummish.Harry Nilsson wrote this little jewel for *the Monkees*. It showed up in one of those little music-video-like bits that weren't part of the story they used to put at the end of some shows, with the boys performing a song.In this case, they were all dressed up in white pants, striped blazers and straw hats (even Nesmith, of course).Davy cheerful...

To win you more than just a friend

This song came on while I had my iTunes on shuffle this evening. It got me thinking. When I was a kid watching reruns of The Monkees on TV and listening to their music, Mike Nesmith was my least favorite Monkee. Now he's my favorite. That is all.
