I'm really quite a spaz, actually. And while I don't weigh quite as much as D. Boon, if I were ever to perform live, I'd probably end up looking a lot like this minutemen

I suppose there are a lot of bands that I could say "changed my life" in my formative years...Devo, Sex Pistols, REM , The Clash, Gang Of Four, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, X, The Replacements, The Smiths, Dream Syndicate, Husker Du, etc, etc...but there's probably no band that holds a higher place in my personal pantheon than The Minutemen...the first time I heard them, it was like a revelation...pure and true...fast and furious..and it stuck...boy did it ever...they were pun... I would like to dedicate my first post to something I hold close to my dear heart: The guitar. Ok so everybody LOVES the guitar and everybody plays the guitar and every guitar player can rip up some sort of pentatonic shred/"blues" solo before you can say "Stevie Ray Vaughan." Here's my grand epiphany. I LOVE GUITAR SOLOS . This is years after rebelling against anything from Jimi Page to Yngwie Malmsteem because there was some sort of energy missing from their kabi... MORE

Every now and then I think of a song that, for this portion of my life, defines me best. For the past year and a half, it's been this one: list monitors arrive with petition iron-fisted philosophy is your life worth a painting? is this girl vs. boy with different symbols? being born is power scout leader nazi tagged as big sin your risk chains me hostage me, i'm fighting with my head, am not ambiguous i must look like a dork me, naked with textbook poems spout fountain a... Thanks to Michael Goldberg for noting here the day of D Boon's passing. The Minutemen were one of my first obsessions, and early on distanced themselves from the rest of the LA punk scene by pushing the envelope lyrically and especially musically. Double Nickles on the Dime is an essential album. I have no doubt that if D Boon were alive today he would still be making vital and challenging music. Choosing a song is hard, but I like this one, it has a spoken word quality to ... MORE

Today is the birthday of the late D. Boon, who co-led the great rock/punk/folk/jazz trio, The Minutemen. D. Boon died in a van accident in Arizona on December 22, 1985.
Mike Watt, left, and D. Boon in 1979. His best friend and band mate, Mike Watt, emailed this out today: friends, april one

Since "Gringo Go Home" is now the official foreign policy of Venezuela, I thought it was time to upload possibly the best gringo anthem of all time.

My virtual friend Joel Orff is a free lance cartoonist who inks the seminal comic strip, Great Moments in Rock 'n' Roll, for the Pulse of the Twin Cities newspaper. I wanted to share a strip we collaborated on because I've been posting about musical memories of long ago. Here are three college radio memories captured in cartoon form. The best part is that he's still drawing and he always needs another great moment. Perhaps you'll send him one of yours. See his archive here.... MORE

I've decided this is the life...worked two hours this morning sitting at the desk [8-10], then came back and slept til about twenty minutes ago. So now I'm sitting here, eating tuna on ritz crackers, listening to this Minutemen record I picked up yesterday and chilling out, no roomate in sight [she'll be back in the morning]. So I guess I need to work on this short paper I've kinda been putting off, but given this setting, it won't even be that obnoxious to do... Take... MORE

My best friend was a skateboarding punk rocker... that was pretty common at Commie High School in the late 80's, and the fact that he was listening to: Rush, Fishbone, All, Tom Petty and the Minutemen wasn't all that uncommon either. My first year of high school the two bands that I heard the most about were The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Metallica.... but I never seemed to catch on to some of the band that he listened to, that didn't matter as we had bonded over GI Joe figur... Fuck Bob Dylan. Seriously. All I ever hear from rock critics, potheads, and Martin Scorsese, et al., is that "He is one of the greatest songwriters ever." This is one of the most vast overstatements of the history of modern music. Bob Dylan put out decent music from 1962-1996, ending, in my opinion, with Blonde on Blonde. Yes, Blood On The Tracks is OK, but pretty much everything he has done in the last 40 years is trying to recapture the magic of those first 5! Not to ... MORE
