"My Shy Violet" was the follow-up to the Mills Brothers' 1968 comeback hit "Cab Driver." It wasn't as successful as its predecessor, but did well on the easy listening charts, where the Mills Brothers briefly found a home in the late '60s. The group's sound during this period was very much in keeping with then-current trends in adult contemporary music, right down to the "Nashville Sound"-influenced country-pop arrangements comparable to those heard on Perry Como and Dean Martin albums from the same period. My Shy Violet is a journeyman album for the Mills Brothers, mixing show tunes, country songs, and happy, easygoing, but somewhat generic pop songs. To their credit, the Mills Brothers included a number of new compositions on their late '60s albums instead of relying heavily on covers of well-known hits, which gives the albums more character. "The Ol' Race Track," a gently humorous account of a down-on-his-luck gambler, provided the group with another minor hit single on the heels of "My Shy Violet."
