The Mills Brothers were one of the major African - American jazz and popular music vocal quartets of the 20th century. The group was a family affair with John Jr. (1911 - 1936) on guitar with brothers Harry (1913 - 1982), Herbert (1912 - 1989) and Donald (1915 - 1999).
