Ain't No Use (Live at The Bottom line '77)

First up the Meters touring behind their 76 release trick bag at the Bottom Line NYC doing Aint No Use. A 12 minute jam on the Rejuvenation LP which became kind of a standard at NYC loft parties, is stretched a little further here. Lots of Guitar from Leo Nocentelli. The second cut is the JB's classic Pass The Peas. This was recorded live in '91 when The Meters (w/o Art and Zig) played in Switze...

FF: A lesser known Meters tune

This track dates from the period shorly before the four Neville Brothers got together to make the Wild Tchoupitoulas LP, after which Art and Cyril left the Meters to form the Neville Brothers with Aaron and saxman Charles (now that his spell in Angola for drug ofences was over). The "Fire on the Bayou" LP shows a band not wholly sure of its direction; a cover of Art's first hit from 1954 "Mardi ...

I find it impossible to keep up with the volume of stellar releases this year. It's as if all my favorite and future-favorite artists got mad inspired over the winter of '07 and now the tunes flow like a mighty river. And, while high and mighty record companies fall from CD-dependency, independent labels continue to prosper with limited edition vinyl releases and digital download options. So...

SUNDAY COVERS - THE METERS PLAY THE BEATLES
about 1 year ago

Much as I love the Meters music in general, I think this tune misses the mark spectacularly, as they add little to a typical John Lennon dirge. Mind you, millions of you out there love the Beatles in all their forms, so let's see what YOU all think of this track - not up to me to say what's good or bad, as it all depends on individual taste. Comments awaited with interest.

More funk from New Orleans

I know that the Meters are hardly unknown on MOG, but there's never a "wrong" time to play them.According to bassist George Porter, they got the riff for this tune from a burnt piston in the engine of the band's van. After a while, Zig started drumming on the inside of the roof, then Art started singing "bom she bom bom".The rest is history

The song, titled "They All Ask'd For You," was recorded by the original Meters during the '70s and was based on an ancient New Orleans nursery rhyme, as interpreted by drummer "Zigaboo" Modeliste. It can currently be found on Funkify Your Life: the Meters Anthology (Rhino), one of OffBeat's "100 Essential Louisiana CDs.This track I took from my copy of " The Very Best of the Meters", and was wr...

funky friday gets the shaft...and the meters clap their hands

I was going to do a post on Dylanesque jazz, because I've been listening to the new Jewels and Binoculars album pretty much all day.But I realized that it's Friday, and much as I like J and B, funky they are not. And it seemed to me that in light of recent events, a little handclapping might be appropriate. So I present The Bar-Kays, performing "Son of Shaft." And some audio applause courtesy of...
