"Swamp Pop" - The Meters

(18)
Blog post image preview The song, titled "They All Ask'd For You," was recorded by the original Meters during the '70s and was based on an ancient New Orleans nursery rhyme, as interpreted by drummer "Zigaboo" Modeliste. It can currently be found on Funkify Your Life: the Meters Anthology (Rhino), one of OffBeat's "100 Essential Louisiana CDs.This track I took from my copy of " The Very Best of the Meters", and was written by Arthur "Red" Neville and George Porter, Jr.

Blog post image preview Well, I couldn't make it to the big ol' MOG party, but I bet it sounded something like this. Here's some irresistible New Orleans-style funk, in the form of "Cissy Strut" from The Meters, with Art Neville doin' his thing on the Hammond B-3 (his nephew Ivan "Scrape" Neville held down the organ chair at the MOGfest - he's no slouch), along with George Porter on bass, Leo Nocentelli on guitar and Zigaboo Modeliste on drums. ...before there was the Neville Brothers, there was the Meters ...anybody who think that all these cats were about was world-beatish Louisiana stomps have never heard the funkily syncopated Cissy Strut that the Meters cut back in the day...also, here's a Meters Best of LP that nobody should be without...I'm still surprised to note that nobody's sampled this big-ass-beat for a hip hop single...oops, did I say that out loud???

These guys are from a well known town that i love called New Orleans. They have been making music together for over four decades and show no sign of slowing down any time soon. New Orleans is home to some nasty ass funk and this band definately fits the mold and lives up to the Big Easy's standards.
