The Mekons and The Ex crashed through the first-wave of the 1970's British punk scene and still remain two of the most influencial punk bands to date. The Ex, with more than 20 full-lengh studio albums to date, have collaborated with the likes of members of Sonic Youth, Chumbawamba, and avant-garde cellist Tom Cora. Through the years, they've experimented with non-Western types of music, incorp...
They've been around for an eternity, gone through countless changes in style and personnel, and left numerous classics in their wake, yet many still do not know about the staggering wonder that is The Mekons, pride of Leeds. This slice of hootenanny hokum is from the band's wildly inspired and indescribably varied country punk rave-up, Fear and Whiskey, from 1985.
Over 30 years after forming, The Mekons are still alive an kicking with a new album and tour on the way. Natural will be their first full length album since 2002's OHHH!. The Mekons will be touring in support of natural starting late next month. Unfortunately the short tour will only cover the midwest and eastern regions of the country, maybe an expansion is in order. It seems like every big album in the world came out on August 21...but don't let the Mekons new one get lost in the shuffle. It's pretty wonderful. Here's a bit from my PopMatters review, which went up today:It's been five years since the Mekons' last album of new material, the grand scale, countrified OOOH!. That would be a monumental pause, and maybe even a death knell, for most bands. Bu...
