"Wow," my friend mutters as we turn down the final lingering sounds of the Mars Volta's 6th album, "That completely sucked."
Sadly, I'm forced to agree. Though there are some very catchy movements to this piece, at no point in any song does the Volta recapture the feel of their earlier albums.
The reason for this seems to lie in the fact that the lyrics and their delivery are both lacking. While Cedric Bixlar Zavala's vocals are one of the main attractions to most Mars Vo... MORE

i really really love the mars volta's new album. does anyone else? i mean at first i was a little disappointed because none of the songs exceeded 10 minutes like their previous albums, but the songs just have SOMETHING about them that makes you keep listening. sometimes i only intend to listen to a couple of songs, because i either have to go somewhere or i don't feel like sitting at the computer for 1hr+ but as soon as i hear "haaave you seen.." i can't stop listening and ... As the iPod population grows, CD sales tank. Once you've got the file machine, you don't want the disk. Disks sound better than low-res MP3s, but it seems most people don't care. Don't forget, low quality cassettes eclipsed sales of vinyl records, which still sound better than the vaunted CD. Sound quality is not an issue, and won't be until people start acquiring high quality sound systems. But the iPod delivers portability. How many people sit in a static place and li... MORE

I've been so busy the past few days that I haven't even had time to listen to the new Mars Volta release. In my defense, I cannot listen to a new album partially; the first listen must include all tracks. Anyways, I had some reading to do so I decided to pop it in. Wow.
The album is chock full of the sweet electro-funk for which the Volta is famous. In fact, it's sort of a return to their original sound. The album pretty much rocks for a solid 2 and a half hours. We'll t... MORE

Okay, so it's been almost a week since they officially released this, finally, after months of leaks and tour bootlegs and rumors and interviews and all the hooplah that surround a new record. The dusts have cleared and here I am to review the album after listening to it about five times in the past day, going to see them on tour, and joining their largest forum (the comatorium).
Personally, I've been a fan at the outset of their release of Amputechture two years ago (th... MORE

The Mars Volta release their fourth studio album The Bedlam In Goliath today. To celebrate here are four videos for four tracks off the prog-rockers' new album, also produced by the band's guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez: "Wax Simulacra," "Aberinkula," ""Goliath" and "Askepios." (Try to say those four titles 10x really fast.) The Mars Volta, "Wax Simulacra"
"Aberinkula"
"Goliath"
"Askepios"

After listening to an advanced copy of The Bedlam in Goliath for about a week, I am ready to release my opinion of the record, and the band as a whole. This comes at a perfect time, for the album will be released tomorrow. This may help you save money and rather indulge in something that may not leave you somewhat annoyed.
It is important to begin with my proclamation of being a huge At The Drive-In fan. Having said that, I have been on The Mars Volta's side of the bat... MORE

... so here it is. Starting things off by setting rather high expectations and featuring this song, but what else can I do when I am still coming back to this album and song nearly every week since its first release? Probably one of the most comprehensive and complicated pieces of musical art I've come across. This is, of course, to be taken with a grain of salt since I really haven't gone any particular route as far as musical taste. I guess in that respect I could use ... MORE

The Mars Volta are getting creative with their anticipated new album The Bedlam in Goliath. Goliath doesn't hit stores till January 29th, but the Volta are already releasing the album's cover art to fans via an online game/puzzle. Once you solve the puzzle, located here, you are rewarded with an MP3 . The bummer is that the track isn't and preview of Goliath, but a cover of the Circle Jerks' "Back Against the Wall."
The Mars Volta will play the Bill Graham Civic Auditor... MORE

The Mars Volta's new concept album The Bedlam in Goliath will hit stores on January 29th. Some songs that make up the album include "Aberinkula," "Metatron," "Ilyena," "Tourniquet Man." A few tracks run more than 10 minutes, like "Goliath," and are doused with the guitar experimentation of previous Volta albums. Red Hot Chili Pepper axeman John Frusciante even adds some of his skills to the album.
The band came up with the idea for The Bedlam in Goliath after guitarist O... MORE
