How often does a band come along, put out an amazing, resonant, timeless debut album (one that even spawns a memorable single which is covered and used over and over in commercials a decade later), and then, for all intents and purposes, disappear? Not too often. Then, we have The La’s.Not Alison Goldfrapp’s “Ooh La La”; or Ronnie Lane singing the Faces’ “Ooh La La.”; or that Christmas

Let's celebrate DMDM's hapazard presentation style with a Tuesday edition of Sunday Covers. Yeah, but is it for last Sunday when mog was down, or a primer for next Sunday? Or, that Sunday in June when it rained all day - or last Easter spent with - you figure it out.Short lived hit machine The La's did a great job with Jumpin' Jack Flash, eh?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To make a body of work that is excellent despite being so obviously rooted in the music of yesteryear is a great achievement. The La's one and only album [1990] is so assured that any notions of nostalgic cheese can be waved in an instant; all this despite the band's leader, Lee Mavers, dismissing the material wi...

Now this is a classic. The La's were a great band, and Lee Mavers wrote an album's worth of genius songs for their 1990 debut. They also were totally inspiring live performers - check out this vid from Much Music (and try to ignore the dipshit VJ):

It’s a strange feeling to be holding a new La’s product that is not a bootleg or re-master of previously released work. However here we have 17 tracks from 4 BBC sessions, spanning 3 years and four different band line-ups. Informative liner notes come from fan M W Macefield, who explains the birth of the band and unhappiness within the ranks over their debut album. The first session is from t

We all know of the Go Discs era La's and just before with the BBC sessions, but there is much more besides. For a band known for just one album (or could that be just one song?) it's no surprise that the majority of La's material remains out of touch. This unofficial bootleg comes with the following text:"The Story of the La's begins in 1984 when the name reveals itself to Mike Badger in a drea...

What a great band

I remember as a student in Liverpool seeing a band busking and they were very good, a couple of nights later we saw the same band playing the Uni Union Bar and found out it was The La's. Great band and music even though the band line up changed numerous times, the differences with bend members and person issues stopped it or was it the changed line ups, personal problems etc that made the band....

Question of the week, week 41-42

Results of week 40-41: Which is your favourite decade? The 50s 4 (5%) The 60s 11 (16%) The 70s 8 (11%) The 80s 21 (30%) The 90s 24 (35%) Total votes: 68 I'm thrilled that so many agreed with my affection of the decade which I grew up in. This just might be another hint that a new 90s retrospective revitalization is drawing near. The 80s have had their share and I'll be damned if I'm no...
