I've had a huge chunk of a short story I'd been working on in one of my books for months. Now that I am copying it to my hard drive I am inclined to share. I must warn you though, its not pretty. Hopefully its pretty good, but its only been rewritten once, still kinda rough. Its the story of Dan, a trust baby that has been living life in excess and hurt many along the way. Now he finds he'll ha...

Well nowadays everybody seems to be writing an opera , to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's The Origin of the Species . The Danish theatre group Hotel Pro Forma invited Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson to "write music and libretto for Tomorrow, In a Year, a Darwin Opera." The opera will be titled "Tomorrow, In A Year." The production for the opera is described in t...

Wow. I love this video! A dominating drag queen lip syncs the lyrics "I'm in love with your brother... what's his name?" to a roomful of people including the actual singer... and her brother. (His name is Olof, and I'm pretty sure he's the guy who starts dancing in slow-mo with the performer. I think the singer, Karin, is the young woman in the black shirt who gets all the close-ups.)My friend ...

Well, maybe notold per se, but dig it: My sister had a baby boy a few days ago. I'm an auntie for the second time. Here's a song of dedication, for a new heartbeat. She named him Brody, which is a name I love...probably due to my fondness for the Distillers...

"we raise our heads for the color red"What the heck does that mean?!@ I mean, they use it in songs from two of their three albums ("Parade" and "You Take My Breath Away"). Anybody gamble a guess? -> a socialism reference? -> red for the blood of Christ (like Episcopal church doors)? -> space aliens from Mars?Just remember...keep your knife sharp.

Our neighbours in Norway have been reigning the balearic disco scene for a few years now, almost to the point where you’d expect nothing else coming out of the fair country. Dubby disco edit master Rune Lindbaek might not be the most famous of the bunch, although he’s worked with pretty much everyone in the [...]

The show blew me away. Honestly. Mezzanine was beyond packed. Even more packed than it was for CSS/ESG the week before. Planningtorock never showed, but the DJ playing before the show did really interesting things for the most part--there were layered and chopped strings, chattering electronic snippets, a totally-dubbed-out version of "Fever."And now, for The Knife...The Knife (wikipedia)The Kn...

As many already know and are envious of me for, tomorrow I have the pleasure of seeing The Knife play in SF. BTW, did anyone else on MOG get to attend one of the Webster Hall shows? So, since I'm up super early and on MOG, I thought I'd list the TOP 5 songs off of each album that I'd like to hear in the order of importance. Here goes:Album: Deep Cuts1. Pass This On2. You Make Me Like Charity3. ...

It seems so bad to start out a blog/comment/post with the words "Is it just me..." So, I won't... I'll start it as I just have, with a pondering on how it makes me feel to start a blog/comment/post out with the words: "Is it just me..." Is it just me, or does everyone else who's heard The Knife's song "Hangin' Out" want it to be one minutes and thirteen seconds longer? Oh... and what's with ...

The Knife are a Swedish brother and sister who make the most consistently unsettling but compulsive electro/pop/weird music I've heard in a while. The music is composed of weird instrumentation (electro-style Jamaican steel drums, anyone?) and unusual time signatures, and the vocalist, while occasionally vaguely Bjork-esque, manages to sound both old-fashioned (in a kind of gin-soaked cabaret to...
