Times have changed a bit. It's hard to imagine a boy or girl band in 2008 doing this song, but in 1970 psych was in. Goes a long way in showing how close Motown (Norman Whitfield in particular) was watching the Detroit scene, and how connected George Clinton was to the normally in house Hitsville crew.

A few months back I made a post about Afrika Bambaata's Death Mix, a seminal document in hip hop history from around 1979. The mix features breakbeat tunes early hip hop DJ's were spinning and some party raps. One of the tunes on the Death Mix is It's Great To Be Here from the Jackson 5.Taken from the J5's '71 LP Maybe Tomorrow (their 6th in 2 years), produced by the no longer mysterious Corp...

For some reason this news didn't sound that bizarre and unbelievable. But, then again, in the world of Michael Jackson reaching new bizarre and unbelievable heights might be impossible at the point. The news is that the Jackson 5 are reuniting for a tour according to Jermaine Jackson. The brothers Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon and Randy also are hoping to include baby brother Michael for the jaunt. ...

As I said in my previous post, mix tape making deals with alchemy. There are however some probes that have allowed me to strive for the philosopher's stone in the shape of a reel of magnetite.First, do you remember what an audio cassette or tape looks like? It could give you up to 90 minutes of recorded music. This playback time would provide the "scope" for the mixes - remember they used to be ...

1. The Jackson 5, "I Want You Back." The greatest Motown single of all time. The music defines "propulsive," as Wilton Felder lays down an irresistible bass line, three guitars chunka-chunk alongside, the 4 "other" Jacksons doo-wop their way to heaven, and Michael sings like he's a lot older than 11. This is the #1 song in our family history, a song both generations can love, and the sing-along...

The NYT tells us Jermaine has confirmed it: "It is just the timing, so what we've been doing is working on the music and all the logistics." No tour dates yet, but where there's a reunion, there's sure to be a Bonnarumors soon to follow.

This is, quite simply, the best piece of investigative music journalism I've read in a long, long time: "The Jackson Find" by Jake Austen for the Chicago Reader. Many hardcore fans know that the Jackson 5 released a pre-Motown...

"Get It Together" was a good album. The title track was a hit single. However, it seems like the guys at Motown didn't really pay the album much mind when they re-mastered it and offered it as a two-fer with Skywriter. Their source material, at least for the song "Get It Together", does not seem to be a master tape, but rather someone's vinyl copy. I've never known a master tape to skip, wh...
