The first single from the Innocence Mission is, by their standards, a pretty aggressive and glossy alterna-pop song. Though it isn't quite rock & roll, "I Remember Me," with its swirling electric guitar loops, has more in common with Joshua Tree-era U2 than it does with the quiet, Sundays-esque soundscapes or the '70s folk nostalgia that were to come in later Innocence Mission efforts like Glow and Birds of My Neighborhood. Lead singer Karen Paris exhibits a powerful, throaty tone that calls to mind early Over the Rhine or even the Bangles. She apparently had yet to discover the childlike luminescence that characterizes her best vocal performances. The only exception is the acoustic version of "You Chase the Light" on the B-side. That song, with its soft piano accompaniment and Paris' creative lead and background vocals, demonstrates the band's potential for sensitive spiritual insight and movingly melodic restraint. It offers a glimpse of the brilliance that was to come when Innocence Mission separated themselves from the crowd of late-'80s girl pop and developed a unique and distinctive voice.
