It's been a long time, Mog. I have been busy with a young kid and a new job, at an alt-weekly in Minneapolis.
A piece I did on The Hold Steady just went up here.

Craig Finn is apparently guest speaking at Boston College on September 25th for an American Studies class. He'll be discussing his life, music, and lyrics in an informal conversation with Professor Carlo Rotella.

The Hold Steady played at Littleton High School recently, the one directly adjacent to Columbine (yes, that Columbine). You may be asking why a "bar" band would be playing at a high school, and the answer to that question is pretty awesome. The school has a program called the Freshman Academy, which helps ESL , Special Education, and behaviorally/emotionally troubled freshmen in the transition from middle school to high school. A teacher involved with the program heard ... MORE

“I’ve said a number of times that people think of songwriting as a very personal thing: A guy gets up there with an acoustic guitar and he sings his heart out, bares his soul. What we’re doing is more cinematic. No one goes up to Quentin Tarantino and goes, “You must shoot a lot of people. You must do karate all the time.” And yet, I think in the context of what we do in rock, there is this expectation that it’s somewhat autobiographical. These things haven’t happened to me, ... MORE

I was just hanging around the inter-sphere and just now I got an email notification of The Hold Steady's tour. If you've been under a rock (or haven't been getting your MOG -notifications), you may not be aware of how incredible this band is, especially live. I've gushed over them in my post and Satisfiedmind has waxed poetic plus lots and lots of other MOGGERs have discovered these amazing men. So: if you live anywhere near one of these towns, GET TICKETS . Ser... MORE

Man, I love the album Boys And Girls In America by The Hold Steady, but now that I've seen them live, I love it 10 times more. I'll never listen to their albums the same way. This band is an absolute MUST SEE . The Hold Steady... MORE

I find it impossible to listen to bands that are unable to make the transition from the studio to the stage. If you cant do it live find another line of work.
Indie rock is plagued with many bands that suck live. Its unfortunate.
Fortunately, the Hold Steady kill it in the studio and on stage. If you don't have any of their music please go out and grab the first album. Here is a rare cover.... MORE

I fell for The Hold Steady at Lollapalooza 2006. Very nice show. I bought their recent album, Boys & Girls in America. Terrific. And I vowed not to miss them this year at Lollapalooza. I didn't.
He's got it right; they are number one! (but he wasn't saying that at the time)
Sure, there was drinking...

To me...this is the perfect cover. Because to me, the Hold Steady write better songs about the American experience than any artist I can think of since vintage Bruce Springsteen. I have written what feels like VOLUMES about how much I love this band...so I will spare you the wordage and get right to the song The Hold Steady covering the Violent Femmes... MORE
