Considering that HeartBeat previously released a similar-minded best of the Gladiators at Studio One that contains many of the same hits, it may be a toss-up between the better choice. Both discs contain work from the group's finest hour at Clement Dodd's magical studio; it's merely a matter of preference. If you're looking for a congruent listen, then the less comprehensive Bongo Red is the obvious choice. If you would rather have all of the singles intertwined with accompanying B-side dub versions, then Studio One Singles may be up your alley. Albert Griffiths shows off his songwriting ability on his best work, including "Fling It Gimmie," "Bongo Red," "A Prayer to Thee," and "Rearrange." However, unless you are a completist or a DJ who needs vocal-less takes to practice his toasting skills, the plethora of stripped songs are probably unnecessary additions. Aside from this slight deterrent, the hits included here are some of the most harmonious to come out of this wonderfully raw era of roots music.
