What a dirty rock pleasure it was to catch The Cobras last week at Maxwell's. Joey Mazzola, who played guitar on my upcoming Detroit LP, graced the stage with his wildly expansive chops and even sang some skillful back up. I had no idea he could sing too. In case there was any doubt how amusing I find sexual innuendo. (Or bad puns!)
I shouldn't miss this chance to point out that the Detroit Cobras are fucking great and any of their CD's are worth picking up. I'm predisposed to "Baby", but mostly because the included "Seven Easy Pieces EP" features Greg Cartwright, as near as it comes to a guarantee of my liking something.
So yeah, anyway, thinly veiled references to kinky sex...

Three weeks after the stupendous Grinderman show, I find myself again at Slim's to see The Detroit Cobras. Traffic is favorable this time around and I get in a bit before The Willowz kick off the evening. I find a spot to lean on the bar, sip a beer, and relax. I was reading Rawk's post about grief, frustration, and feeling that our efforts cannot dissuade others from catastrophe. I cannot tell you how much I relate. I work as a mental health case manager and experience this disappointment and sadness from time to time. I got my hands on the new Detroit Cobras album Tied & True. How is it? It sounds exactly like The Detroit Cobras. Putting all smarm and snark aside, the reason I say that is I have read much (mostly put forth by label Bloodshot) stating that it was this neo-Spector production unlike what they have done in the past. Anna's post today gave me a brilliant idea. My father-in-law's coming back to town for a weekend or so. He's a notorious 50's and 60's music junkie, and I've already enabled him by showing him how to burn CD's on his new laptop.
