This post for the superb New Zealand pop band, The Chills, shows their many sides... They are the epitome of what a great pop band should be... great tunes, interesting lyrics, simple at times, complex at others... They are a criminally overlooked band...

It's the middle of summer, which means it's winter in New Zealand. Which means, I'm thinking about how great The Chills are again. They made great music for any time of year. Check out this combo... I was hanging out at a little LA bar on Tuesday night, waiting for “time to play” time, and while waiting, drinking, chatting… the DJ (DJ Paulie) was spinning an impressive set of shoegaze / darkwave / Britpop… moving from bauhaus and the jesus & mary chain to the rapture and electralane – and then, he hit the Chills. I just found out that the "secret box" triple cd set Martin Phillips (of New Zealand's legendary The Chills) released through his website a couple years ago, went on ebay for over 200 USD. That's pretty crazy.
Here's one of my favourite Chills songs. Too bad their back catalogue seems hardly available nowadays. Such a shame.
Oh how I would like to be able to magically and instantly digitalize my entire vinyl collection.

I'm from Dunedin where the Chills are from and grew up going to their gigs, sneaking into pubs to catch them live, which is when they really shine. Martin Phillips is still floating around. I think he has done solo work and collaborated with other artists. I wouldn't be surprised if another Chills album came out in the near future. He has a reputation for being a bit of a control freak and perfectionist which has caused a lot of friction with past band members. I can't b... MORE

I'm ordinarily too much of a control freak to allow all 14,195 of my music files to go free range and play in whatever order they may choose, but I've been doing so for the past hour or so, with the inevitable mixed results. Best forgotten act? Toss-up between Samiam and The Chills, for very different reasons.
