Blog post image previewThis post for the superb New Zealand pop band, The Chills, shows their many sides... They are the epitome of what a great pop band should be... great tunes, interesting lyrics, simple at times, complex at others... They are a criminally overlooked band... Here's three more songs for your enjoyment... The first of these is a rollicking tune about Global Warming... (keeping in mind that American winters are hot summers in New Zealand)... Here's "February"...

Blog post image previewSince I've joined the MOG community, I realize that I've had around 70 posts or so and have yet to devote any of them to one of my favorite bands of all time.I'll take care of that oversight with this, the first of two posts... The Chills are the vehicle for singer/songwriter/guitarist, Martin Phillipps... They have had many incarnations over the years but Phillipps is the constant. On the heels of another legendary New Zealand band, The Clean, Martin and The Chills em... MORE

It's the middle of summer, which means it's winter in New Zealand. Which means, I'm thinking about how great The Chills are again. They made great music for any time of year. Check out this combo... The first song "I Think I'd Thought I'd Nothing Else To Think About" is a brilliant post-punk rave up (pulled, pops and all, from my flexie disk I got out of a magazine... i think it sounds fantastic...) and (in the comments) I follow it up with an orchestral swirl of a... Free music video of Pink Frost (10)
I was hanging out at a little LA bar on Tuesday night, waiting for “time to play” time, and while waiting, drinking, chatting… the DJ (DJ Paulie) was spinning an impressive set of shoegaze / darkwave / Britpop… moving from bauhaus and the jesus & mary chain to the rapture and electralane – and then, he hit the Chills. Pink Frost. And I was just transported into that feeling you get of “man I just love this song”. The first time I heard this song – it was the House of L... MORE

I just found out that the "secret box" triple cd set Martin Phillips (of New Zealand's legendary The Chills) released through his website a couple years ago, went on ebay for over 200 USD. That's pretty crazy. Here's one of my favourite Chills songs. Too bad their back catalogue seems hardly available nowadays. Such a shame. Oh how I would like to be able to magically and instantly digitalize my entire vinyl collection.

I'm from Dunedin where the Chills are from and grew up going to their gigs, sneaking into pubs to catch them live, which is when they really shine. Martin Phillips is still floating around. I think he has done solo work and collaborated with other artists. I wouldn't be surprised if another Chills album came out in the near future. He has a reputation for being a bit of a control freak and perfectionist which has caused a lot of friction with past band members. I can't b... MORE

I'm ordinarily too much of a control freak to allow all 14,195 of my music files to go free range and play in whatever order they may choose, but I've been doing so for the past hour or so, with the inevitable mixed results. Best forgotten act? Toss-up between Samiam and The Chills, for very different reasons. Samiam were just an incredibly solid, tight Bay Area punk band/early emo act or whatnot who rocked my world throughout most of their career. Very catchy stuff, con... MORE
