Should be around 33 years ago, when The Carpenters started to launch their songs to public. I was really impressed the first time I've heared. It made my teenage time so wonderful.

Another fine example of Karen Carpenter's talents, "Merry Christmas Darling" was co-written by Frank Pooler and Richard Carpenter with a pretty good arrangement by Richard Carpenter. This particular selection and the other before all come from the 2 CD set "Carpenters Christmas Collection" made up of the first complete disc and one which was released a few years later. Both are very magical and still sound freshly minted.

Today is "Bella Voce Day" in which we will be hearing two beautiful voices. The first is the always lovely to hear Karen Carpenter who was taken from us way too soon, just when she was on the verge of becoming a better and greater artist. The Rhapsody music service has an association with Robert Christgau. This posting is in memory and honor of my sweet boy Gordon who passed away this Thanksgiving Holiday. Since I am completely heartbroken and slightly incoherent, I'll let my sister, a much more eloquent writer memorialize this loving furry soul. And I'd like to think Karen Carpenter sings this song for all the wonderful four-legged companions we've ever loved and lost.

This is for you dermahrk. Karen Carpenter isn't someone I listen to all the time, but she is an artist with a truly unique and beautiful singing voice. I wonder what she would be doing if she were born 20 years later?

I ordered this music CD from an eBay seller in Taiwan because it wasn't available locally at the time. A TBS (Japan) Dorama, "Friends/Tomodachi" had The Carpenters version of "The Rainbow Connection" as the opening theme, which was a good fit to the unexpected interactions between a disparate group of people who met at a late night beef bowl restaurant. Looking over the liner notes, the "California Dreamin" demo stood out, and is very different from the rest of the tracks.... MORE

i rediscovered this song for myself and then found the video. a little out of character for the carpenters, but they do have their quirky side.

A friend of mine at work gave me this incredible movie. It's called "Superstar" and it's the Karen Carpenter story told with barbie dolls directed by Todd Haynes, sheer fuckin' genius.
I was so moved. I guess it's hard to find because her parents in it were portrayed as monsters, by pushing her to perform and to become more successful. But I sought out some of The Carpenters music. After seeing that brutal but incredible movie and watching this video clip of her perform... MORE

This Kermit the Frog remake ("Sing, sing a song, Sing out loud, Sing out strong, Sing of good things not bad, Sing of happy not sad") serves as a kind of statement of purpose for the Carpenters, I suppose, but those lyrics are insipid no matter how pretty Karen or Kermit or Big Bird sings them.
