With "Love Fool," the Cardigans catapulted from a cult favorite to an international phenomenon. Instead of being happy with their success, they fretted about their artistic credibility, concerned that they were seen as merely a light pop band instead of an ironic pop band. This usually results in a self-conscious departure from form -- and that is exactly what Gran Turismo, the follow-up to First Band on the Moon, is. There are still elements of the Cardigans' melodic style, but they have trimmed away their sense of humor and style, adding vague electronica experiments and mildly distorted guitars in their wake.

I always liked this album much more than anything the Cardigans have done. What do you think their best album has been thus far, and why (if you like them, of course)? I picked this one because of how dark it is, and I love the production and variety of instrumentation. Plus, these songs were just great. "Explode", "Higher" and "Hanging Around" are my personal favorites.

When I first heard The Cardigans, I did not like them at all. The music sounded pointless and the vocals annoyingly sweet. Then, they got a bit dirty and a bit tortured with Gran Turismo and convinced me that they can write memorable, emotionally-powerful songs.
