It's time for Number Two from Alaska natives the Builders & the Butchers. These Americana roots rockers captured hearts originally with their 2007 self-titled debut, following frontman Ryan Sollee's psycho obsession with pre-1950's American music. A new Portland-transplant Sollee added his Alaska pals to the mix, after they waved goodbye to the land of Sarah Palin in hopes of warmer weather. Yo...
My back aches, my embarrassing farmer’s tan burns, my feet are killing with blisters, and my ears are throbbing … yet all of these masochistic SXSW side effects feel oooh so good, not to mention the fact that they are soooo worth it. The Austin music shitshow, drawing 12,500 people to the city this year despite a crumbling music industry, has grown in the past few years. In 2001 only some 7,0
From the files:"The Builders and the Butchers initially turned heads with their immersive performance style--employing singing in the round sans mic, recruiting the crowd as back-up vocalists, traipsing off into the street in the middle of the closing song. But shorn of the theatrics, the band's music easily holds its own. The record traces the course of a traditional Butchers set, from strippe...
*rating* 8.7*summary* The punk (in)sensibilities of the Mekons worships at the altar of Tom Waits gospel with a vocal mix of the Decemberists meet Two Gallants. It's good.*disclaimer* If you're looking for your standard music review here - or if you simply have a short attention span - you'll be disappointed with this post. I've decided to try something new here - if you don't like it, tough...
So I buy the new Builders and Butchers CD at their show last night (which was excellent). Loading it onto my hard drive I see the tags are screwed up so the title of the CD is "Ambient / Dream Pop" rather than "Salvation is a Deep Dark Well."Heh.
It’s an inevitable truth that being a part of the audience at a show for The Builders and The Butchers means being as much a part of the performance as the band itself. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Ryan Sollee reminded everyone of this with a vengeance on Thursday night, as the Portland darlings held a CD release party at the Wonder Ballroom to kick off their first headlining summer tour. Midw.
Earlier this week, The Builders And The Butchers release their second full length album called, "Salvation is Deep Dark Well". As many readers of this blog know, this is one of my favorite bands. Hailing from Alaska via Portland, these guys play a southern-grime-rock that returns to classic rock and roll roots. Everyone feels they need to draw comparisons to what/who they sound like which i...

[09-21-2008] The Builders & The Butchers' sound is hard to peg down. Portland's Willamette Week called them, "A demon-possessed Southern Baptist preacher leading a requiem at a swamp-set, barn-burning hoedown." I'm not quite sure that description does them justice, but my own came up short with "Americana Punk." Waiting for the show to begin, I began to notice the deliberate lack of electric ...
The Builders and The Butchers [MySpace] are beginning to earn a reputation as a bunch of "road warriors" not only due to spending the last year on the road, but also their penchant for...
Well ladies and gentlemen, I have decided to enter the podcasting world and present a show that showcases some of the bands Under The Dog writes about and hopefully some that I don’t have time to write about. As I’ve stated before, UTD is expanding it’s music to more than heavy ass abrasive music and branching out into more stuff that I think continues on the tradition here at UTD. Since it
