Aquarium Drunkard just premiered this great new tune by the Broken West. It comes to us from their new record Now or Heaven, which sounds like it must be a fantastic one indeed. MP3: The Broken West - Auctioneer I'm going to go ahead and say that this sounds like a sexier version of the National. [...]~~
Tomorrow sees the release of The Broken West's sophomore LP, Now Or Heaven, their second album for their label home at Merge Records. The album marks a departure from the more straight froward, hook laden, work of the bands last two studio efforts, both in tone and arrangement. We caught up with the Broken [...]
You Ain't No Picasso just hipped my ears to Los Angeles five-piece 'The Broken West' a recent addition to the ever impressive Merge Records stable. If you're sucker for Power Pop then you'll love the early tasters from the bands forthcoming album “I Cant Go On, Ill Go On” and their meaty and melodic nods to Chilton's 'Big Star'.The album is set to release Jan 23rd state-side and will be accomp
Nice review on The Broken West's new record from Pitchfork.http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/40787/The_Broken_West_I_Cant_Go_On_Ill_Go_On
Has anyone else heard of these guys? I recently bought their album and am loving it. Sounding at times like a smoother Spoon, Wilco or even Calexico this album employs a sound that harkens back to the great rock-pop gems like The Posies or Teenage Fanclub. Really nice stuff, that I hope does not get swept under the rug of ignorance perpetuated by those who can't grasp that "pop" does not equ...
"Perfect Games" is an upbeat and sunny slice from the Broken West's Now Or Heaven . That said, it's surprising how easily the song lends itself to soundtracking this fairly funny clip about a pair of assassins in cross-pursuit made by some of the Funny Or Die folks. The hitmen have their murder attempts foiled repeatedly, until their final showdown at a Broken West house party where they're se...
It's out and it's good!I just came home from the band's cd release party at Sea Level Records in Echo Park. The band sounds great even though frontman Ross Flournoy said he was fighting a cold. Also saw them last night as they wowed a packed Monday night at Spaceland in Silverlake. I've been listening to these guys for almost two years and it's just getting better and better. They are touri...
Ross Flournoy, the Memphis-born lead vocalist and guitarist for the Samuel Beckett referencing (I Can't Go On, I'll Go On ) Los Angeles pop quartet the Broken West, writes and records soundtracks for DVDs when not performing songs from his band's second full-length Now Or Heaven . I asked Flournoy a bit about the process and how it differs from the other music he composes. After our discussion,...
Tune in to hear The Broken West from 2 to 4 pm (PST) on the "Aquarium Drunkard" show. The band will be playing acoustic tracks off of their superb debut "I Can't Go On, I'll Go On" (Merge Records).
Prepping for their upcoming sophomore LP, Now or Heaven (and supporting Fall tour), The Broken West shot us the second MP3 off the album to preview here on AD. The album itself is a clear maturation of the golden-coast pop sound of the group's 2005 self-released EP and subsequent Merge Records debut, I Can't [...]~~
Photo by David GreenwaldWell, shit. Buy me a one-way ticket to Bummerville, dudes — just days after finding out Harlem Shakes have called it quits, I hear L.A. power-pop favorites the Broken West are done, too. Full disclosure, I have a vested interest in these dudes — in addition to being great, my name’s in [...]
