AMG Review of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Stephen Thomas Erlewine
All Music GuideWith Revolver, the Beatles made the Great Leap Forward, reaching a previously unheard-of level of sophistication and fearless experimentation. Sgt. Pepper, in many ways, refines that breakthrough, as the Beatles consciously synthesized such disparate influences as psychedelia, art-song, classical music, ock & roll, and music hall, often in the course of one song. Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita." There's no discounting the individual contributions of each member or their producer, George Martin, but the preponderance of whimsy and self-conscious art gives the impression that Paul McCartney is the leader of the Lonely Hearts Club Band. He dominates the album in terms of compositions, setting the tone for the album with his unabashed melodicism and deviously clever arrangements. In comparison, Lennon's contributions seem fewer, and a couple of them are a little slight but his major statements are stunning. "With a Little Help From My Friends" is the ideal Ringo tune, a rolling, friendly pop song that hides genuine Lennon anguish, ŕ la "Help!"; "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" remains one of the touchstones of British psychedelia; and he's the mastermind behind the bulk of "A Day in the Life," a haunting number that skillfully blends Lennon's verse and chorus with McCartney's bridge. It's possible to argue that there are better Beatles albums, yet no album is as historically important as this. After Sgt. Pepper, there were no rules to follow -- ock and pop bands could try anything, for better or worse. Ironically, few tried to achieve the sweeping, all-encompassing embrace of music as the Beatles did here.

Of course. You had to see it coming. Maybe not a psychedelic band per sé, but definitely the people responsible for teaching little billy how to "drop out."The long standing rumor is that the title was code for LSD. Well if the drugs didn't give you flash backs, then ??Yellow Submarine?? probably did. I probably would have chosen ??I Am The Walrus??, ??Glass Onion??, or even ??Revolution #9..

Before anyone jumps down my throat, it's not my opinion, it's an "article":http://www.ireland.com in today's Irish Times. Still, a pinch of salt to go with a generous helping of Beatles adulation does no harm. Just strange that the IT website lists this as an editorial piece...David AdamsIt has a few decent tracks, but they stand in stark contrast with the surrounding acres of self-indulgent, G...

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and National Association of Record Manufacturers have come up with a list of the 200 albums they think everyone should own. It's pretty bad. I mean, who doesn't agree that Creed's Human Clay was a better record than London Calling by The Clash? the list can be found it the comments section. Hold your nose because it stinks.

I know this reeks of shameless self promotion, but I'm really loving my job these days, and we got some ink about what we do in the Asbury Park Press, plus some video on their web site - so I guess there's at least a remote possibility that Bruce Springsteen saw me singing while he ate his bagel this morning!Basically I work for a startup, "Lightspeed Audio Labs":http://www.lightspeedaudiolabs....

i was driving down the road listening to the radio yesterday when 'a day in the life' came on. it hit me, after the final note of that song, that 'a day in the life' might be the perfect song. it's obviously not perfect in terms of what they might teach you in a songwriting workshop, what with its non-traditional structure, and its song-within-a-song approach. but that's exactly what makes i...

Like most of you, the Beatles are, in my personal opinion, the Alpha and the Omega musically. So when I heard that there was going to be a Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas composed entirely with and about the music and life of the original fab four, I had to make the trip to see it for myself.I am relieved/pleased/surprised to say that I couldn't be happier with the results. The production trans...

There was something odd about the copy of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LP John Tefteller was staring at.The faces were different. Where John, Paul, George and Ringo were supposed to be, others had taken their place.“At first look, I thought, ‘Okay, this is a standard Sgt. Pepper LP, but — hey, wait a minute, it’s still sealed. It’s not opened,’” relates Teft

It was a blast into 1967...well, sorta. Over the weekend surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr rocked on stage together for the first time since 2002. McCartney welcomed his old friend and former band-buddy as Billy Shears, creating Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band nostalgia. But sadly Starr didn't get on his drum kit till the next number. He first opted for a mic instead and sa...

Paul McCartney's opening night set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival won rave reviews. It also came with additional cost. The Beatle performed for nearly three hours, delighting fans with a career-spanning set, and one that went well past the midnight curfew imposed by the city of Indio. Once the clock strikes 12:01 a.m., the charge is $1,000 per minute, said Indio police spokesm...

Oregon 2nd hand record dealer John Tefteller has unearthed what could well be the rarest Beatles record of all, This odd version of "Sgt. There's a subset of Beatles fans who eagerly seek out the band's "rarities" - the various edits of "Christmas Time Is Here Again," for instance, or The Beatles' version of "Come and Get It," etc. But few of these enthusiasts, to my experience, have paid adequate attention to the original mono mixes, especially of ??Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?? and ??Magical Mystery Tour??. I myself...

Been lost in a bit of a dream this gloomy morning. Sitting at a traffic light, I pondered my current surreal state of being and as I change the station on the radio, what do I hear? _A Day In The Life_, the song that epitomizes the state between dreams and reality in my own psyche (and quite possibly, the greatest song I've ever encountered). The line "he didn't notice that the lights had chang...

From Bloomberg.comBy Jeremy GerardThe news flash from Washington crossed my computer screen like a lightning bolt of reality ripping through the Joshua Light Show at a Grateful Dead concert. This was the disturbing story: Alcohol and drug use figure heavily in popular music, according to a study of lyrics to 279 songs presented yesterday at a conference of public health practitioners. As a resu...

I want my favorite artists to make money so they'll keep making music I like. But honestly, what is it with you and lyrics?
