Magical Mystery Tour

The U.S. version of the soundtrack for the Beatles' ill-fated British television special embellished the six songs that were found on the British Magical Mystery Tour double EP with five other cuts from their 1967 singles. (The CD version of the record has now been standardized worldwide as the 11 tracks found on the American version.) The psychedelic sound is very much in the vein of Sgt. Pepper, and even spacier in parts (especially the sound collages of "I Am the Walrus"). Unlike Sgt. Pepper, there's no vague overall conceptual/thematic unity to the material, which has made Magical Mystery Tour suffer slightly in comparison. Still, the music is mostly great, and "Penny Lane," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "All You Need Is Love," and "Hello Goodbye" were all huge, glorious, and innovative singles. The allad "The Fool on the Hill," though only a part of the Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack, is also one of the most popular Beatle tunes from the era.

The BeatlesMagical Mystery Tour[EMI; 1967/2009]Links: The Beatles | EMI | Purchase The Beatles Remasters Posted by Rob Galo on 10 September 2009Fantastic. My favorite Beatles album remastered! No more of this crap 1987 CD. It hasn't sounded this good since I listened to it again again on my walkman when I was in grade school, on this dubbed cassette that I'm surprised didn't wear itself out. Wh...

So I gotta admit I haven't been their biggest fan since I discovered Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin when I was a kid. But at the sametime they were one of the biggest 20th century turning points in recorded music history. They were one of the first Rock 'N' Roll hippie long hairs from what I remember.Plus they drove the girls wild like that crazy Elvis, right mom! Grandma to you younguns LOL! A...

The Beatles finally on iTunes!

Paul was just waiting for the big paydayPaul McCartney has signed a $400 million deal, which will see the Beatles catalog make its way to iTunes, at long last.Though McCartney will probably make off with the lion's share of the cash sum, Ringo Starr and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison will also benefit. Michael Jackson, EMI and Sony will also be paid, as they each own a...

At a packed San Francisco hearing today, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) defended your Fourth Amendment rights and urged the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to let our class-action lawsuit against AT&T go forward. The case demands that AT&T stop illegally assisting the National Security Agency to snoop on its customers' telephone and Internet communications. There's much more at stake...

1. The Bonzo Dog Band, "The Intro and the Outro." I suppose it would be more accurate to call them "The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band," for that was their name at the time. Whatever. This might be an odd choice to kick off the Summer of Love Random Ten, but was suitably bizarre, and is still a favorite of mine.2. Toussaint McCall, "Nothing Takes the Place of You." One-hit wonders don't get any better...

Top musical soulmates of all time: The Beatles
about 1 year ago

My buddy introduced me to the Beatles pretty early on, I was about 16 or 17, and he did it right. It was probably the first time I really explored and truly experienced music. I can safely say I probably compare nearly every artists I listen to with the Beatles in some form or another.

It's easy to forget that "Beatles" is a pun, and a kind of ho-hum one at that.

If not for the fact that they were arguably the greatest rock band ever, they might well be just another 60s band named after a creature. But no, The Beatles are The Beatles, and any referent outside of them is neither here nor there. Curiously, an image of a beetle was never to my knowledge employed in any graphic work associated with them. "I Am The Walrus" rarity boosted from courtesy o...
