Abbey Road

The last Beatles album to be recorded (although Let It Be was the last to be released), Abbey Road was a fitting swan song for the group, echoing some of the faux-conceptual forms of Sgt. Pepper, but featuring stronger compositions and more ock-oriented ensemble work. The group was still pushing forward in all facets of its art, whether devising some of the greatest harmonies to be heard on any ock record (especially on "Because"), constructing a medley of songs/vignettes that covered much of side two, adding subtle touches of Moog synthesizer, or crafting furious guitar-heavy ock ("The End," "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," "Come Together"). George Harrison also blossomed into a major songwriter, contributing the buoyant "Here Comes the Sun" and the supremely melodic allad "Something," the latter of which became the first Harrison-penned Beatles hit. Whether Abbey Road is the Beatles' best work is debatable, but it's certainly the most immaculately produced (with the possible exception of Sgt. Pepper) and most tightly constructed.

The BeatlesAbbey Road[EMI; 1969/2009]Links: The Beatles | EMI | Purchase The Beatles Remasters Posted by Adam Clair on 10 September 2009Forty years later, there's little one can say about Abbey Road that hasn't already been said about the Beatles' '69 swan song (or the countless imitators and limitless influence it has had in that time).Reviewing this album in 2009 is like trying to prove to so...

So this whole MOG thing is brand new to me and I'm just messing around with the interface, trying to familiarize myself with the place. I discovered it via Maxim, of all places. I spend a lot of time on SoulSeek-- a peer-to-peer file sharing program full of music-- and have since become a music junkie. So how about those Beatles? I know it's a huge fucking cliche, but I decided with another fri...

I suppose it's ironic that I'm starting off this MOG experience by listening to the last song on the last album that the greatest band in the history of music has ever released, but alas, so shall it be.I think that this idea is really incredible. I think that social networking can be more than just about writing down your favorite movies in a 3 inch by 5 inch box. I think that it should be. An...

I realize that covering the Beatles seems almost pointless, but they wrote such great songs that I'm sure it's difficult for some bands to resist covering them at one point or another. In the midst of recording my own version of "You Never Give Me Your Money", it struck me to go on iTunes to try to find some other Beatles cover songs. My favorites of the hundreds that I've found are Stevie Wo...

I like this time of year so much. Even with the unusual cold snap, one can still see nature reawakening. CrashPryor posted beautifully about hope and the power inherent there-in, quoting from the movie the Shawshank Redemption. I see the hope, the faith, of nature moving forward, continuing it's cycles. All cultures celebrate the reawakening in their own way, and its easy to see why. After the...

"Something/Come Together": A Direct Result of the Failure of "Western Communism"

In April 1967, in order to take advantage of lower corporate tax rates, The Beatles entered into a partnership called "Beatles and Co." Each member individually owned five percent of the company, with the remaining eighty percent controlled by a new corporation collectively owned by all four. This corporation was soon dubbed "Apple". Brian Epstein's death that August signaled a void in the grou...

Rediscovering Abbey Road, and finding this to be one of my favorite Beatles songs. Partly prompted by reading the autobiography of Geoff Emerick, the Beatles longtime engineer...this is their furthest delving into classic 60's British blues-rock, and it's just the sleaziest song they've ever recorded. McCartney is outdoing himself on the bass, Lennon is singing his heart out, and then that co...

The snow is gone. The sun is warm. Spring is here at long last in lovely Lennoxvegas. Two weeks left of school! Most excellent. Then seven weeks of rest at home before camp starts and that means new music. Yay. Plus, I'll be working during the school year, so I'll be able to afford going to concerts. Right on. I am so pleased to see the sun. It makes all the music seem so much brighter.
