The Beach Boys

Pet Sounds

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a ock record. "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B" (the last of which wasn't originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as "You Still Believe in Me," "Don't Talk," "I Know There's an Answer," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." It's often said that this is more of a Brian Wilson album than a Beach Boys recording (session musicians played most of the parts), but it should be noted that the harmonies are pure Beach Boys (and some of their best). Massively influential upon its release (although it was a relatively low seller compared to their previous LPs), it immediately vaunted the band into the top level of ock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit.

I just finished watching a shitload of music videos and I’ve come to realize that my decision to pursue starting my own digital label is the right one for me. Not because I seek to gain some kind of cultural status, the abundance of beautiful and sexy women or the opportunity to make lots of money, it’s because I’m actually attracted to the idea of creating art that people outside of my inne

So I've been a little obbsessed with Brian Wilson lately...mostly Pet Sounds. It's only in the past 6 months or so that I've ever really listened to the entire album, and not just the singles. It all kindof started earlier last year, when someone shattered my world, so to speak. And during this time I found myself actually "listening" to the words of songs, as opposed to just hearing them...if ...

Pet Sounds may essentially be the most perfect pop record of the past 50 years. If not of all time. If there ever was an album that was more perfect than this, please tell me. Because, I would fucking love to listen to it. I mean, I guess I always knew this to be true. I just had to figure it out for myself. I always heard people ejaculating praise onto Pet Sounds. But, I never understoo...

I Want My MP3: The Beach Boys Rehearsing

Time to celebrate the summer that's finally arrived! If Carl Wilson has the voice of an angel, what does a heavenly choir sound like? In 1967 in Hawaii, group rehearsals for a Beach Boys TV show were taped (though I’ve read disagreements from collectors and trufans over the exact circumstances of these recordings). Here’s a virtually acapella version of “God Only Knows”.To hear Carl promoti

Just taking a second out of my Friday to show some love to 'Pet Sounds' and its utter brilliance. Sometimes I listen to this, and the first Velvet Underground record and I think pop music still hasn't caught up to these albums...

...If we're gonna be all obsessed and shit with Brian Wilson, I really like this intrumental from previously mentiond Pet Sounds album. I think this song just sounds like the sixties, caught right as America was falling headlong into those unsure and troubled times. This song is like the soft spot in a gray sky.

I've been away for a little while, trying to lurk from time to time. But I haven't had much chance, or desire to MOG lately.Last Friday (8/11), My future father-in-law had an aneurysm while driving home to take his wife and daughter to dinner. A brilliant man is now lying completely helpless in a hospital bed, trying to heal his genius of a brain, the magnificent of which has been obscured by hi

Damn.I hate this time of year. It's just about time for kick-ass lineups to come out from music festivals I have no chance of attending. Darn you lame-ass hometown in the middle of nowhere. And this is the year both Death Cab and Rilo Kiley are playing Coachella. Damn. Why do I have to be too young to venture out to Cali on my own? Although I still haven't given up Bonnaroo. It is, in fact, onl...

In this post you missed, because you thought it was about Phish, which it wasn't (they were more of a tertiary character within the grand scheme of the post), I opened it up a bit about the importance of the jam in my life. How appropriate that I would come across this article by Joshua Allen at The Morning News, in which he tells us just why 2:42 is the perfect song length. Here's a snippet:"W...

Well color me tickled pink. I have found the nexus where my need for visual information and facts combine. I had been working on some graphic design to chart the rise of what I call "The New Popular Sound" in music. TNPS genesis comes somewhere between The Beatles "Rubber Soul" and The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds albums. This is the time in which I think a new definition of rock and popular musi...

Say what you want about Uncle Jesse. He handled himself well when the Japanese teleprompter ran out, he made an Extreme-ly cheesy music video, he exploited his children to further his career, etc... The fact remains, the man had good taste in music and hence, of course, his love for the Beach Boys. It's no secret that Pet Sounds is/was cited by Paul McCartney as the Beatles' inspiration for Sg...
