The Band Biography

Source: Wikipedia

The Band were a Canadian-American rock group, active from 1967 to 1976 and again from 1983 to 1999. The members of The Band first worked together as The Hawks, the backing band of rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins from 1959 until 1963. Afterwards, Bob Dylan recruited the group for his 1965-1966 world tour. They also joined him on the informal recordings that later became The Basement Tapes. Dubbed "The Band" by their record company (a name derived from how they were referred to during thei...Read More >

Recently saw Scorcese's Shine a Light and now can't stop watching The Last Waltz. Put together this video mashup - some from Last Waltz but some from their studio in Woodstock. Great clip of King Harvest.

I could wake up in the morning dead. What more does anyone need to know. Love this song. There's a certain sweetness about The Band.

I watched Martin Scorsese's film The Last Waltz last night and fell in love with him and with The Band all over again. The 4 CD box set of music from the film is on the way. In the meantime I'm listening to The Band, the one with the bonus tracks and thought I'd post this gorgeous gorgeous song. If you find me in a gloom, or catch me in a dream
Inside my lonely room, there is no in between
Whispering pines, rising of the tide
    If only one star shines
    That's just enoug... MORE

    Moondog Matinee

Blog post image preview Its attractive and fitting title borrowed from the name of an old Alan Freed radio show, "Moondog Matinee" was definitely not the album that a majority of The Band's fans and critics were anticipating. The group had enjoyed mass success with their first three albums, but their fourth, 1971's "Cahoots," was undeservedly regarded as a disappointment. And when compared to the immense praise that went to those first three releases, it wasn't hard to see that The Band were quickly... MORE

    At this time of year
    Those we hold dear
    Reside in our hearts.
    We gather, we feast,
    We laugh
    we sing.
We think of those not with us. This song has been a part of my children's Christmas Tradition all their lives.
No bells jingling, no cheery/cheezey choruses, just a simple retelling of the Nativity Story from the point of view of a poor sheppard on a nearby hillside.
Sung with just the right awed vulnerability by Rick Danko, this song has always touched my heart... MORE

    RICHARD MANUEL (pt 2)

    (76)

Blog post image preview If you read this you can catch pt 1 During the legendary sessions at Big Pink The Band was searching for its own identity. Having toured for years as Ronnie Hawkin's Hawks, and then as Dylan's Band, they had chops aplenty, what they didn't have was an identifiable sound of their own.
But with three strong voices and the skills of Robbie Robertson at songwriting (and to a lesser extent the songwriting abilities of Richard Manuel & Rick Danko)
the Band soon molded ... MORE

    Another Voice. (Fallen Angel)

Blog post image preview Richard Manuel's haunting sad falsetto was one of the great sounds in rock n roll. His almost sublimnal humming adds an etheral eerie touch to the Band's Masterpiece "The Weight". A powerful, soulful vocalist with a natural growl as well as an angelic falsetto, he took the lead on many notable Band tracks. "King Harvest Has Surely Come", "I Shall Be Released", and so many other lyric were brought to life by Richard's evocotive vocal. By the Time of the Band's recording ... MORE

The Band's unique experiences as roadhouse warriors with Ronnie Hawkins, and rock n roll icons with Dylan, helped shape an appreciation for many styles of music. And these myriad sounds from the heartland to the streets of New Orleans were echo'd in the Band's own music and the somgs they chose to cover. Rick Danko's reading of this Lee Dorsey nugget has that quavering, nervous, vulnerable element that so completements the lyric.

Blog post image preview Life is an endless series of decisions and consequences. Some believe their paths are pre-determined. Some believe they determine their own path.
This track by The Band was recorded during the band's very troubled post-success period. The Rock Star lifestyle was taking it's toll, and the music, while still superior, was seen by many as a step backwards, or worse.
Todd Rundgren, who produced this album, had to weedle and cajole the songs from a bunch of drunken junk... MORE

Post Civil War America saw the first great internal migration in it's population. Southern populations, displaced or freed by the war were drifting north to feed the labor supply for the emerging industrial revolution.
Farmers and farmhands and fieldworkers were trading in their horses and plows for the grind of the factory in the city.
And the Country's various regional musical styles were meeting and interbreeding and mixing and matching and swirling and bubbling and form... MORE

Blog post image preview For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan. And for a long time, their personalities were as recognizable individually to the casu... MORE

The Band's place in rock n roll history is secure. An extraordinary band of musicians and singers, they carved out a niche for themselves as a true ensemble in a time of shameless star-turn showboating. When the rock world was wrapping itself in the endless guitar slop of the blues revival, the Band decided on a different route. Theirs was a true band. They were country without a trace of the southern redneck brand of country rock which would flourish in a few years.
