I caught an Avett Brothers show in Asheville, NC last month, and I was blown away. Though I tended to enjoy Seth's vocals more, his voice was shot from screaming, and Scott filled in to sing most of the songs. It was flawless. There's something beautiful about folk music from North Carolina. I'd explain it, but it wouldn't be the same. Enjoy "The Weight of Lies." It'll remind you of your first middle school dance and afterwards smoking those cigarettes butts you stole from yo... MORE

Avett Brothers - Emotionalism [2007] It happened on the second listen. I realized that at some point, I was really going to like this album. And that instance came sooner than I thought. Now, the deeper and deeper I get into it, the more I enjoy [actually ENJOY] sitting back and listening to _Emotionalism_. I gotta admit, it's kinda strange music, but strange in a familiar, comfortable way [chucky says "Nope. I don't do strange"] I think the vocals remind ... MORE

"We're an American music band.." click to play . A year ago, at Pickathon year 8, The Avett Brothers were relatively unknown. So it's hard to believe that one year later they returned to Pickathon as bonafide stars, rock stars even. There's something going on. They are touring with Langhorne Slim in tow - [see what Jenny T thinks of them here], and tonight the crowd went nuts. This is not roots or bluegrass, alt country etc, this is where American music should be goi... MORE

I just love this song. It is so punk and almost makes me want to listen to bluegrass all the time. The operative word being almost.

If you take my heart
Don't leave the smallest part
I've no need to live if you're to come up gone
An as my life turns to a song
And if and when I treat you wrong
No I never want to hurt our family And I would give up everything
No this is not just about me
And I don't know a plainer way to say it Babe
And they may pay us off in fame
Though that is not why we came
And I know well and good that won't heal our hearts We came for salvation
We came ... MORE

Well, this last week has made me appreciate the bay area and its music-centered nightlife.
Last Thursday evening, I caught the Avett Brothers for the second time. Thanks to some positive spin from the music blog peanut gallery, this show's crowd was much more hipsterfied than the last. In February, the crowd was about half baby boomers and half randoms. I saw nouveau hipster mullets aplenty this time around. The show was great. The openers, Kemo Sabe, had the strangest... MORE

This band must be seen live. I've seen them in five cities now (three times at Merlefest where I first discovered them) and it's worth it every single time and mile. I just happened to run into band member Bobby Crawford at one point and we snapped the photo above in which I am smiling ear to ear...a little shameless groupie I suppose. But they are so much fun! Here is there myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theavettbrothers... MORE
