So two gigs in a fucked up week, thankfully. Hooray for escapism, eh. ;) Anyway, the week started with a gig by The Wombats,supported by the Dutch band NeWax. Kudos to NeWax for getting the crowd all warmed up, and for their progression as well. Last time I saw them it was a bit too gimicky, now they really sounded good musically. But The Wombats. In the video below there's about a minute of a game show followed by The Wombats closing the show with an excellent rendition of their song "Backfire At The Disco," available in the US on The Wombats EP, overseas on The Wombats debut album, The Wombats Guide To Love, Loss, And Desperation.

Naming your band after an animal seems like the way to go. But why the sleepy little chubby Australian marsupial? The Wombats, that is, are a British band from Liverpool made up of two Englishmen and a Norwegian. Ranging influences from Hefner, Depeche Mode to Architecture In Helsinki, they draw comparisons to We Are Scientists. Bright Antenna is a Bay Area record label who last week gave us Americans the first domestic release by the best band out of Liverpool since the Fab Four, The Wombats.
The label's tag line is:
"-MUSIC IS A NECESSITY, NOT A PASTIME.-"
