I finally had the pleasure of watching "Across The Universe" and I believe I have a new favorite movie.  It comes as a total surprise because I usually don't like musicals and I'm not a HUGE Beatles fan, though I do dig their music.  "Across The Universe" is based entirely on songs by The Beatles, but performed by the actors in the movie and each song perfectly suited to the plot where it appears.  Not only that, but the cover versions bring a whole new dimension of pathos... Once again, it's time for this week's BROW. On August 18, 1965, three days after the historical Shea Stadium concert that kicked off their 1965 US tour, The Beatles were cooking down in Georgia for their big show at the Atlanta Stadium where they once again performed on a baseball diamond.   Tagged as the "world's most famous drum skin," the drum skin featured on the cover of the Beatles' Sgt Peppers album sold for $1.1 million, or the price of a really nice house. Also selling for the price of nice house ($834,000,) were handwritten John Lennon lyrics for "Give Peace a Chance." BROW continues this week with a recording that dates back to January 1964 when The Beatles were using a studio in Paris to record Can't Buy Me Love. In between visits to the studio, Paul put together this early demo called One And One Is Two and recorded it with his own acoustic guitar accompanyment right in one of The Beatles' hotel rooms. Clips of a Scottish TV interview with the Beatles have been recovered after being forgotten for 44 years in a rusty film can in a garage in South London. It was stacked among 64 other unmarked cans and presumed lost. In the interview, recorded back in April 30th, 1964, John Lennon and Paul McCartney talk about the first time they met and how they record songs. This is one of my favorite Beatles outtakes. I love the way John Lennon messes up the chords at the beginning of the song. And by the end he yells out, "I showed ya!" to George Martin in the control booth who replies, "Great fine." To me this is a rare historical document hearing The Beatles in the recording studio. Not much is known about this mysterious recording of John Lennon's most likely recorded sometime in the mid-to-late 1970's. It may well have seen the light of day on an official release had John's life not been stolen from him so early. This is in demo form with only John and his acoustic guitar.
