Teenage Fanclub's 1995 Mellow Doubt single came in two parts. The first single contained the gentle pop of the Norman Blake-penned title track (taken from TFC's Grand Prix album) plus three more tracks. "Getting Real" is a fine Gerry Love track that is structured like an early Who song with lots of dramatic drumming and a rollicking chorus. Norman Blake's "Some People Try to Fuck With You" is a gentle ballad with lounge-y percussion accents and falsetto crooning. Blake was seemingly able to crank out nothing but gems during this period of the band and this song could have easily been a highlight of the album if it had been included. The last track is an acoustic version of Raymond McGinley's "About You." The full-band version kicks off Grand Prix in grand fashion, this version is a front porch strum-along that proves a great song is a great song no matter how it is recorded. This is one of the Fanclub's stronger singles; hardcore Fanclubbers should seek it out.
