"and this is my four leaf clover..."

We have tradition at my bookstore gig, one of our managers loves 80's music, so we set our satellite radio to the 80's station. Throughout the night we call each other and in the worst geek way quote lines from the songs we're hearing to each other in conversation form. For example, if Head Over Heels is playing I would page in and say "Funny how time flies." It's really dorky but it helps pass...

All I know is that you're beautiful and I want to touch you and feel the warmth of your blood and your life

So, I'm driving across the bridge this morning, thinking about how I feel sad and I want to cry, when Everybody Wants to Rule the World comes on the radio. It took a second to realize just how right the song was for the moment, but I had caught on well before the delivery of the line, "Welcome to your life, there's no turning back." I don't care to consider why, but I find the song almost epi...

I'm still all wrapped up in this song, but I've got nothing else in me beyond clever titles, so here is a thing from the tail end of a graveyard shift a few and a half years ago. I guess the song changes with the passage of time, or, better yet, I'm probably slightly further past the foolish idea that the icons of the 80s lack anything greater than kitsch value. Or maybe it's just that 2009 r...

Essential 80's Tracks, Part 121

Now here's a really great live video from Tears For Fears, recorded live in London in spring 1984. Their first album, "The Hurting", was a big import record around my hometown (Long Island NY), sounding a bit like an evolution of the New Romantic sound - TFF was way less fashion conscious, more song oriented, looser. Every 12" release from the band seemed to have really strong live tracks, so w...

Music To Commute To

I heard this song on my walk from the bus (okay, really it was Walgreen's as I stopped there between the bus and the office) and work today. It's an overcast, windy, brisk day, and this song just totally fit with the vibe on Chicago Avenue.

Tears For Fears put out a 12" of "The Way You Are" between the release of their debut album "The Hurting" and their massive worldwide hit "Songs From The Big Chair". Mass exposure for Tears For Fears kind of ensured that history would not look back on them kindly, and their pre-mega "Songs" material is somewhat overlooked, which is a shame. "The Hurting" sounded really different to anything els...

Back in the day...

Some co-workers were discussing today's youth and their fondness for text messaging. As we are adults, we do not understand the need to send hundreds of text messages every day. We then spent some time discussing the days of our youth. This of course got me thinking about music from my younger days. Here's a little blast from the past:I believe I was around 11 when this song was originally ...

Has anybody heard "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending"?

Has anyone heard the Tears For Fears cd called "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending"? I think it's an amazing cd and it kills me that it wasn't heard by more people. If you're into Beatles-esque pop, intelligent lyrics (except for "Call Me Mellow" - sorry!), lush orchestration, and catchy hooks, I bet you'll love this cd too. I can't believe how underrated these guys are. I think they're geniuse...

Music in the Movies pt. 3

Huzzah! A real movie song! This one I think if my favorite that I have found so far. The movie? Donnie Darko - the emo-est emo movie of all time. The song? Tears for Fears "Head Over Heels". Not only is the song kick ass, but it is edited into the movie perfectly. In my opinion, nothing fucks up a good movie song more than an awkward fade out but we don't have that problem here because everythi...

I can hear the following songs each day and never get tired of them. In my opinion, these songs are all perfect and I wish I had written them! What songs can you not live without?1. Ordinary World - Duran Duran (The acoustic version is especially great too),2. Secret World - Tears for Fears (This is on their 'reunion' cd called "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending". I can't believe this song di...

Eureka!

I have discovered what I like to think of as a secret of the universe. Anytime you feel depressed, just listen to Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears. If possible, picture the corresponding scene from Donnie Darko, one of the greatest movies of our time. If my theory is correct, any feelings of disdain or sadness will quickly pass, leaving only shiny, plastic coated 80's joy. It really is astoni...
